In Sweden, Canon has started inviting journalists to a PR event at September 29th.

"During the fall of 2009, Canon will make one of the biggest and most important product launches in the history of the company."

Anyone betting for the EOS 2000D? No, seriously, I've no further information than this. But Canon is foremost a camera company, sooooooo.....

If this is true, which I have seen no evidence that it is, it sounds like Canon has the market cornered on hyperbole.

Well, it was a journalist/photographer here in Sweden who told me about the invitation.
I don't see any particular reason for him to lie about that.
I got a copy of the invitation. Obviously, it's in Swedish. I hope you have no problems with that...

Basically, it says that Canon will make one of their largest and most important product launches during the fall this year, and now three people will takl about tomorrows trends and factors for success in a digitalized world. Which could mean just about anything, including products that aren't cameras.
Then there was an image of a resonably sized box, with a red blanket covering most of it.
It also says that a more detailed invitation will follow.

full invitation wrote:
"Under hösten gör Canon en av sina största och viktigaste lanseringar i
företagets historia och vi hoppas att du kan vara med. Under en lunchträff
är du välkommen att lyssna på VD Jouko Tuominen, Marknadsdirektör Monica
Forsberg och trendanalytikern Magnus Lindkvist, när de pratar om
morgondagens trender och framgångsfaktorer i en allt mer digitaliserad
vardag.
Datum: 29 september
Tid: Kl. 11-13

En inbjudan med mer information kommer snart. Välkommen!"

Biggest announcement? A new longer zoom TV camera with more stops of IS.

Or medium format digital, or both the 1D4 and 1Ds4 announced at the same time lifting them above nikon's 2 pro models with a good 2 years of breathing rooms since nikon does pro models on a 4 year cycle and the d3x is only a year old.

My guess: 1D4 aps-h 16MP 13 fps, 1Ds4 32MP, 5fps, 16bit RAW. Both with full 1080p video.

Gee the brief glimpse of the box under the red cloth looks almost like the gold coloured box of the old Canon AE-1 camera. Maybe Canon is going nostalgic on us.

This could be a variation of the last "Evolution ad", maybe that is a shipping box, and each day a flap is opened, part of a box is shown, the product box inside is slowly opened, and on Sept 29th, the final product inside that box is showing in full light?

If nothing else, Canon is a master of building up hype before the news gets out, I give them kudos on that. And maybe my decision to sell the MKIII a month or two ago wasn't that wrong after all?! Maybe I can find a replacement at $2K now.

Yeah, if that is what is being announced, the "...biggest and most important product launches in the history of the company" scares me for what is in the future.

My hopes:
1) A new line of cameras with DSLR sensors, but without the mirror box. Basically a DSLR-quality camera that is much more compact. Similar to the new micro-OM cameras by Olympus.
2) Digital medium format.

Unfortunately, I foresee this announcement being the new 1D's...

One thing to consider is one of the larger Camera mail order houses (Cyberphoto) in Sweden reduced their stock of 1DsMk3 one or two weeks ago. Anyone who bought a 1DsMk3 would get 10% on any one Canon lens. The offer was limited to a few houses, and have ended now.

Yes, and some (Media Markt) are occasionally selling new 1Ds Mark III cameras close to 50% below the normal cost for a new one. That also looks like they are trying to get rid of them.

I'd like to add that a quote from the invitation above is a bit misleading. The invitation doesn't state that it's "the biggest and most important announcement", but it says it's "one of the biggest and most important announcements".

Not really the same thing.

But the origin of this rumor is from Sweden, and in Sweden we never lie. Oops, now I did, but I'm currently in Finland, so I have a special permit! :p
