If it's not bigger, it is easier to see side to side from further away from the body. Basically, the "viewport" size is much bigger which is what I notice right off the bat. The ability to add gridlines or turn the AF points not in use on/off is also very nice.

yeah, half the price of the nikkor, smaller, lighter, and AVAILABLE! I've been checking both out lately, but the nikkor is supposedly one of nikkon's best lenses (better than canon's L) and AFs ridiculously quick so I've been considering it.

Love the bigger viewport. I like the gridlines too. I purchased the Katz Eye grid for my 50D. Very primitive alternative, IMO.
I read that the D700 gridlines are in 4ths and not rule of third lines. Wonder why they did that?

I'll likely go with the Sigma 24-70 since I'll also have a good 50/1.4 lens.

Paul, good to see you here. We usually meet up in the Elinchrom, I mean lighting forum.;) Which Nikon do you have?

Speaking of lighting, I like that the D700 flash can trigger Nikon speedlights. Does anyone know if Nikon's CLS is more accurate than Canon's ETTL speedlight system?

-Peter

It`s full ETTL or manual with high speed sync OCF.......bw!

^ yeah, the 4ths bit is weird. And I also have a 1.4 50mm as well. For now I went with a 5D for my 24L with that money... Basically, I know I can resell the 5D in a week for no loss if I want to. It will also let me do a 5D -vs- D700 comparison and a 24L to siggy... I'll also be able to see how the 5D goes against a 5Dii if I'm lucky. That way I'll know for sure if the nikon is right. Then I'll sell the 5D and 24L if they're no better for the 24-70 nikkor when it's in stock. If the 5D and 24L offer something special I'll keep saving.

time to wake this thread :) Id like someone to give me the idea of how big is the uncompressed file of a 8 bit tiff from the d700. Also how many centimetes wide is it at 300dpi?

Edit: My worry stems from one of jacobsens original comments on the D700, will the 12mp hold in todays world when you make a sale of a print or a digital file.

Having used Canon (30D and 40D) for around 4 years and having built up a fair bit of gear, I also made a tough call to switch to the D700. Some thoughts:
- Comparing my Nikon gear vs my Canon gear, Nikon wins hands down - build quality and feel. Yes, Nikon may cost more overall, but I feel you're paying for the quality. None of this "you have to pay for a lens hood, oh and it will be cheap and plasticky"
- the 24-70 is my 'main' lens. The Canon version just didn't cut it for me - not sharp. I wasn't going to waste more time having to go through 5 or 6 copies (like some have experienced) until I got a sharp copy. The first Nikon 24-70 I bought was sharp straight out of the box - it is what I hoped my 24-70L would have been
- D700's menus system is a bit 'involved' with deep menus, however it is very flexibility in terms of the level of customisation!
- Having really had a good play yet, but SB-900 flash seems more intuitive than 580EX2 (plus it has a longer range)
- I like the ability to go from Single Shot to Continuous Shooting mode quickly via a simple switch. However my experience is similar to Lloyd's - Continuous AF appears more reliable than Single shot in extreme/low light conditions (which isn't ideal if you're trying to recompose a shot and single shot AF is what you want)
- Overall I like the layout/controls of the D700. I like the fact that you have to press the 'mode' button and then turn a dial to switch from Av,Tv,M, P. Some may find this strange, but on my previous Canon's the left dial used to always get moved in my bag and then I would shoot in the wrong mode! (yes I should have checked)

2 things I will really miss:
- Canon 70-200 f/4 L IS - Nikon has nothing that compares. Such a great lens. Sharp and easy to handle
- the big round dial you find on the x0D series (and higher). You can so easily scroll through shots so quickly with this dial (its a bit slower on the Nikons)

True, the above is not a fair comparison since I'm comparing an old 40D against a newer D700 (and not a 5D mark 2), so take what I say with a grain of salt. Mind you, I stand by my claim about Nikon's build quality - really good, both lenses and bodies.

Here you will find alot of help. At least if you post in here and keep to topic, you'll have no problems. There are too many fanboys in this part of the forum that will literally try to stray you away from Nikon (just being honest). If you keep an open mind, we'll help you along the way to making sound choices on what gear to buy. Hope to see ya there! :)

:) about keeping on topic.... Thanks for your 3 replies which neither gave me the size of the image nor the weight of an uncompressed tiff file.... ;)

Im pretty sure that the camera is good, I really dont care about the specs of the camera nor which lenses fit, what I wanted to know is if the finished product will hold on my clients requests, I know that jacobsen was very happy with the switch but he necer commented on the file size and clients again. Then again that does not matter either as I dont think we have the same clients... ;)

take all of this with a grain of salt, but please someone out there with a D700 just let me know the cm of a uncropped file and the weight of an 8 bit uncompresssed tiff. thanks a million!!

Well he is using Darth Vader as his avatar...I'm just saying....

Actually, I doubt that over 10,000 posts constitutes a Nikon Fanboy trolling his way around - unless he's a recent convert ;)

I'm pretty certain they're 16 bit TIFFs, not 8 bit TIFFs, and they're rather large. Gotta love that I have my camera with me but no card reader/USB cable, so I can't give you a file size off hand.

I used a 16 bit raw file and saved it as a tiff without using any compression and it came out to 30.1 MB. I did one a 8 bit and it came out ar 15.0 MB
