So, I pointed my 5DII and 100macro at the sun recently. I got the most insane flare.

Ive never had another lens do this. The picture is tied into my blog. Basically its a sunstar but the flare turned into a circular rainbow. No editing.

Thinking about it...I wonder why that happened...
Several of my other lens do not do this. I know I have certainly pointed my lenses at the sun before. The only other weird occurrence was the forming of 5 suns when I pointed a 5D with an IR filter at the sun. Very bizarre.

be careful with pointing your camera directly into sun light, I know someone with a 5dII that burned his sensor because of this! He gave it to canon and thats what they told him most likely what burned his sensor

Well, I just tried it and didn't get the same flare. :(

And, yes... I've never heard of a sensor being burned but you can damage the curtain I think.

If you leave it on liveview I'm sure you can.

that's a pretty neat flare.

and yes, you can burn your sensor, mirror, mirror box, or curtain pointing at the sun.
