Can the Epson P5000 be software updated for 5D II RAWs?

As the title says really!

I don't have a laptop, so sometimes when I'm out and about for a few days shooting programs I run out of storage!

Have seen these as an equivalant to the Canon ones but a lot cheaper but they are not compatible with RAW files from 5D IIs!

Is anyone aware of a software update that would solve this issue?

I'm not aware of any recent firmware update for the P-5000. I have a P-5000 with the latest firmware upgrade, but have been looking for a solution to the same problem since I plan to get a 5DII early next year. You could email Epson and ask about it.

The other thing to keep in mind is that even though the P-5000 will not allow you to view the .CR2 files from the 5DII, it will copy and store the .CR2 files on the hard drive. In that respect, it gets the job done. If you really want to see what you shot on the Epson, one person suggested shooting RAW + JPG since the JPGs from the 5DII are viewable.

you could buy more cards. they are very cheap these days. man, you know times have changed....the P5000 cost about 500 bucks and only had 80 gigs of storage!

The thing about these Media Storage units is that they use a standard 2.5" IDE laptop hard drive units. I can get a 250GB HDD for less than what a 16GB high speed CF costs!
I already have over 20GB of storage but when your RAW files are 28MB each this storage doesn't last very long!

Boy do they change...for $400 you can get a netbook with 160GB internal, and add an external USB storage unit with 500GB.

i had a P3000 that we dropped a 120 gb HD into before i went to africa. i got the epson for a steal on double rebate so i think even with the HD upgrade i was in it only about $300.

they're great units because of the hi-Res LCD and you don't have to RTFM to figure out the controls, which are fairly intuitive.

most places i go i also take a laptop so i sold my epson p3000 and laptop and bought a netbook, as well as an external HD.

i transfer my files to my desktop when i get home and erase them from the storage units so i could get by with just CF cards. I already carry 56 gigs with me when i travel and i also don't like erasing my cards until everything's backed up twice when i get home.

Hey Ed, you have the same working config as me...netbook + USB harddrive.

So why don't you copy CF to the internal drive in the netbook and copy it also into the USB drive while on the road. Then at home you only have to copy files from USB drive to PC at home, and you always have two copies (or more!) regardless of your location.

Wilt -- i usally do. my first copy goes on the external HD (WD passport) and then i'll sometimes store an extra copy on the netbook. if i am erasing cards then i definitely back up a copy to the HD and the netbook.

when i get home i plug the passport into my PC and download into folders which then go into lightroom.

be careful with those WD passports. I brought 3 with me on my yearlong trip through asia, and all 3 died/are no longer recognized by my usb ports on any computer.

I've since switched to the lacie "rugged" drive's and I've had MUCH better luck with those.

I really don't think the Epson will require an update to read the RAW files (could be wrong though). I know my P3000 didn't require one to read the EOS 40D or 50D RAW files.

'Storing files' is very different than 'displaying photos' when it comes to RAW files!

Not sure what you mean Wilt. He wants to store them and that's just a matter of transferring them off the Media Card but at the same time I'd assume he wants to be able to view them also ...

The Epson storage devices don't convert the data off the RAW file yet simply read the embedded .jpg file.

Even Epson says "Photo File Format: JPEG; RAW (from select DSLR cameras) "

And then on another page they state:

So why are they so specific if the device merely reads the embedded JPG data within the RAW file? One would think that would be merely finding header information that precedes the JPG thumbnail withoug decoding the RAW data itself. But if that were the case, why a specific list?!

Well I'm not 100% for sure but the last firmware v1.20 (on 01/22/08 ) _ I know it reads the 50D RAW files and that firmware was released way before the 50D was put into production.

I guess what we need is for a 5D MKII owner with an Epson to maybe verify if it can read the RAW files.

Found this at Epson:

Pictures taken on a digital camera and saved as RAW files include a header that records image information (metadata) such as the date and time the picture was taken, make and model of camera, ISO speed, shutter speed, and white balance. The P-3000 can read image headers that follow the EXIF (Exchangeable Image File) file format specification.

Almost all RAW images contain a copy of the photo image that is stored as an encoded JPEG data stream. The P-3000 reads only the JPEG data stream inside the RAW file when displaying an image.
