I'm thinking possibly an Eastern Phoebe or possibly a Peewee but not sure. Lovely image in any case. If you had another image showing the wing detail it would probably help with the ID.

Great IQ and background.

Thanks Harvey, much appreciated... Here's another shot... Out of 310 shots, only 4-5 were acceptable... Camera and lens have a date with Canon in the next few days.. Focusing problem still exist... Problem is intermittent and I was lucky to get these two...

Really nice shot Norman, I am pretty sure it is an Eastern Phoebe... by the coloration of the bill and the darker head. The Peewee, generally has yellow on the bill... But as always.."I could be wrong"...

I am going with the Eastern Phoebe as well as I just looked it up in my bird book. That aside, I really like these images, love the background in both. I wonder if I should have gone with the 400 prime over the 100-400?

Definitely an Eastern Phoebe. Two excellent shots Norman.

What kind of focusing problems do you have with your camera/lens?

Thanks much, I got lucky on these two...

What kind of focusing problems do you have with your camera/lens?

It seems to be an intermittent problem these last four months... I purchased the 400mm L lens in April/09. Generally, birds smaller than a dove, it has a difficult time focusing on, that's why I say I got lucky... It's a great lens, just look at what others are doing with theirs.. I know of no other having issues like this... I'm hoping that when it goes back for the 4th time in as many months, they will see that this one (lens) is faulty and do the right thing by replacing it... I don't know what it will take for them to see this... This time the managers will look at it, so I'm told by the supervisor anyways...

Some great captures Norman. To my eye there is nothing wrong with the lens/camera....but as you say, these are just a few images from many that are sharp.

I'm not saying there isn't anything wrong with the lens but.......

Are you expecting the images to be sharp straight out of the camera? If so...you shouldn't.

Sharpening filters need to be applied to the image especially if it's cropped. Something to do with a sensor (just somethng I've read on-line) making the images soft . I noticed a huge difference between out of camera images from my 350D and 40D...even my 50D is different. Each requiring less or more sharpening in post processing. The 350D was actually the sharpest out of camera believe it or not.

Now you say the lens has a difficult time focusing on smaller birds...does it hunt or are you saying that they're softer then larger birds? If it hunts while trying to focus on smaller objects (and you're using the single/center focus dot) then I'd say there's a problem. Mine is instant focus. I point it at the subject and focus is achieved instantly...as long as I'm using the single focus dot. Light is an important factor as well..but these images the light is sufficient.

The big question is distance from the subject and how much cropping is involved. We discussed this through PM's so I think the cropping issue is resolved.

The 400mm prime is a great lens. It's a shame you are going through this and hopefully Canon resolves this for you.

PS....my offer still stands about testing out the lens. (sorry, I had to say it :D)

Duane

Hi Duane, the images and I understand them not being sharp out of the camera but these are totally not focused correctly.. OOF I rapid fired these that you see and of 20 or more, I was able to save these with photoshop... Now I expect some and many at times to be OOF, but out of several hundred (700+)on small birds, (Pretty much all we have here) I can count on my hands the ones that are reasonably focused correctly and workable...

I used sharpening filters believe me, sometimes too much just to try to save a photo.. My two other lenses work fine and acceptable for processing by today's standards...

I have noticed this past week, it is hunting more than usual and even in superb lighting as well.. From shutter speeds of 1000 - 4000 and all with Spot Metering too.. No change with Partial and Evaluative... I always use the single center focus dot/square... All shots are on a tripod and I just can't believe so many shots go to the garbage and not even close to an acceptable range of focus...

I'll admit in the beginning I was cropping the wrong way, but I am now looking at the pics at 100% and decide from there..

I shoot late day and the sun is shining on two of my feeders so for the most part, lighting is a non-issue...

Yes, it's a great lens, that's why I purchased it and from the advice from a few here.. This is an isolated incident I know and kinda freakish in nature... And I haven't forgotten you either, but Canon is expecting this lens soon... Will see what they from there, and thanks...;)
