But the hobbyist could spend his entire life setting up a shot and still flub it.

The argument about effort, time, and care is moot.

You're the one who keeps trying to distinguish between a professional and a hobbyist. I made no such distinction in my original post. A far more practical distinction, in my mind, is based on the actual ability of the photographer, and not how they choose to label themselves or their work.

Semantics. Creating images for sale is working in a professional capacity. Creating them on one's own time is working in an amateur/hobbyist capacity. If you read the thread, I'm not the one who brought it up. I pointed out the irony, that's all. ;)

I think you've gotten lost in your own argument. You just said that a, "hobbyist could spend his entire life setting up a shot and still flub it." If the "hobbyist" is a full-time professional photographer working on his own project that he has spent his entire life setting up, then why would he suddenly "flub" it because he wasn't being paid?

Some of you guys keep saying it was pitch black. It wasn't pitch black. It only appears pitch black because of the limited latitude of the sensor. The eye probably would have seen it as a moderately dark surface.

I didn't say all hobbyists are full time professionals. Doing something in a professional capacity doesn't mean one is a professional, and doing something in a hobbyist capacity does not mean one is strictly a hobbyist.

No matter how you try to twist it around, it has nothing to do with someone expecting to create a beautiful image out of crap. That's the root of this thread really. People not wanting to put effort into lighting a scene, and expecing to push and pull and tug the pixels around to compensate.

If a camera doesn't have an unlimited dynamic range, adjust the scene. If you can't adjust the scene, accept what you get. If you won't accept what you can get, don't trip the shutter. Being in front of you doesn't mean you have to take a picture of it.

Neither did I, but then again, I wasn't really talking about hobbyists vs professionals, I was simply talking about two photographers of equal skill, one having to work under the constraints of a business contract, and the other free to pursue each image until their own personal criteria are satisfied.

You guys remind me of a bunch of bench racers from the old days. Comments of "Small Italian horses", "Dense English air" or that "Massive American torque trumps all the high rev horse power claims"

My advice; Get out of the garage and go have fun driving, or in this case Get out of the house and go have some fun taking photos. That is what it is all about, not sitting here arguing with each other pointlessly.

Would this be the place to mention the satanic messages spelled out in the bayer pattern of the sensor on my 5D m2?

I'm starting a new thread for that.

Also stay tuned for the "Show us your 5D II pattern noise artwork!" thread.

So to conclude:

This is how the 5D Mk II should be like:

1. Have 99 focus points, all implanted in your brain, so it'll focus on what you want, just in case you forgot to change the focus point.

2. A 99 stop range with absolutely no noise even at ISO 24,000... just in case, and the files in ISO 100 should be so clean you can cut your retinas if you were to pixel peep.

3. The ability to shoot in Infrared by a switch of a button.

4. Being able to do X-rays, in case your buddy falls and breaks a bone and you're no where near a phone.

5. Wait, strike that last part... it should have a built-in phone (3G turbo of course) so you can upload your images while on the shoot.

6. Video in any frame-rate you want and with a built in steady-cam feature with a push of a button.

7. Total weather sealing, so you can dive with it... or if you're just clumsy and fall off a dock while backing up to shoot a duck.

8. Battery life that last about 100,000,000 frames so you can go onto a world trip with just one battery.

9. Super compressed RAW files that are smaller than a full res jpeg, and yet you can fit 99x more images on a 8 GB card than you can now.

10. Finally.... it'll only cost $99 and will only be sold to those who knows how to use the M mode.

Yes? No? Maybe?

No I'm not drunk... just having fun :D
