If there is one prime lens to get for the 7d, what should it be?

300 f2.8 L IS USM, of course. :cool:

What are you looking for the lens to do for you? :rolleyes: Not sure anyone can meaningfully answer without some more direction about your primary need.

200mm f2L IS of course or maybe the 1200mm L lens.
In all honesty. There is no one lens prime or zoom you must have. It all depends on what you are looking to do.

What do you like to shoot and what is your budget?

I want to get a general all purpose prime lens...one that is a little versatile on a crop camera...use for portrait or sceneries...or even a walk around lens...i was thinking of the 35L.

I think either the 24 or 35L will be a good focal length for what you are looking for.

Sigma 30mm f1.4 or a Sigma 20mm f1.8, Canon 24mm f1.4, Canon 35mm f1.4L, Canon 35mm f2 come to mind.

I'm actually ok with what i have right now..but thought i want to add a prime to the collection since they are usually faster and sharper.

sigma 30 or 50, canon 85 1.8 are all good, reasonably priced lenses. Set you zooms to these focal lengths and see which you find best

The Canon 100mm ƒ/2 is an excellent lens, I use it routinely on my 40D and will also use it on the 7D when I get it later this year.

Apparently I've been dubbed Foxy.

As a general purpose prime, anything in the 20-35mm range. 35mm is a little on the long side, though...I would stick with 30 or wider.

The faster-than-f/2.8 lenses you can choose from are the Sigma 20/1.8, 24/1.8, and 30/1.4, or Canon 24/1.4, 28/1.8, 35/2, and 35/1.4.

I believe there have been several incarnations of this very question for any APS-C camera...the answers are still the same!

35mm = 50mm, 85=110-ish...etc
