You left out the Nikon 300s group.

+1

I know you were half joking but actually this is the best answer...Canon didn't make the 7D to compete with its own products. Feature for feature, it appears to be designed to compete with the Nikon D300.

It's funny, people have been wanting something to match the Nikon offering in this range, and then when Canon gives it to them, they talk about how it's not good enough or it will take sales away from other products in the Canon lineup.

5DmkII :: EF 24-105/4L IS :: EF 85/1.8 :: EF 70-200/2.8L IS :: EF 100/2.8L IS macro (coming soon!)

I voted for the potential 50D / 60D customers, but I also think it will have a big impact on the secondhand value of 1 series cameras (mk II and mk IIN in particular) and will tempt a lot of people who would otherwise have purchased one of those.

I'd say it's the 50D customer that's OK with shelling out a little more cash for extra features.

+ 1...I intend to buy for sports pgotography, and keep the 40D as a backup...just pleased I waited and did not go for the 50D.

However, firstly I wanna see some decent reviews before making the plunge ;)

Wouldnt bet any money on it... Since most festures on 7d is old news for Nikon users.

It would stop the bleed of Canon users to Nikon who want the features of the D300/D300s, and could entice some Nikon users to jump because of the Canon lens line-up.

If the 5D MKII had pro AF, better weather sealing and "Commander" mode for off camera flash I would never have picked up a D700.

Agreed, though I didn't get a D700. I wouldn't have "compromised" on a 1DmkIII (heavier/bigger than I really want and overkill for some things).

Heh, I have not the slightest interest in a 7D from the perspective of someone who owns a 1D III... very different cameras. FPS doth not a 1-series make. To me it looks like a worthy upgrade from a 50D etc. or as a nice compliment to a 5D II for when AF is more critical.

I'm almost afraid of what the specs of the 1D IV are going to be after it, though... Going off how many MP throughput the 7D has - 14mp x 10fps? ISO who knows? :p

For sure, but i wouldnt bet any money of current Nikon users switching to the 7D cause of its features, cause as i said most of it is already available in the D300/S. As for the lineup, sure if you want lighter zooms such as F/4.

I was talking with my friend about the 7D, he wants to get one eventually as i do..

Him: He wants it because he shoots sports (hockey) so he'd like it for it's 8FPS. He was saying how he'd like the lens microadjust feature so it's a mix of chosing that camera over a 50d/60D and 1D (for it's autofocus abilities).

Me: Definatly sway me from buying a 50d (can't say about the 60D yet). I want the better high ISO performance it seems to deliver, built in flash transmitter, and alot of the other cool new features (video is cool too, but not on my wish list). I think it's more "bang for the buck" over the 5DmkII which is now out of the picture (not that I can afford it anyways).

I don't see the 7D as a major step forward, more of a small step forward and a side skip. As such I cannot see many current Nikon users jumping ship to get one.

I have decided to await the next incarnation of the 1Ds mk111. If Canon can resist putting Video into it, one could well have my name on it (bank manager permitting).

I think it's all Canon, so it doesn't really matter. lol. Nikon, perhaps?

Certainly. I have no doubt Canon has calculated the numbers and designed their product differentiation carefully enough that any "stealing" from their own lineup will still be profitable.

the 7D does make sense...

the pro lineup has a "sports" body and a "resolution" body, now so does the "advanced prosumer" lineup...

the only thing is that when the 1D4 the 1D3 used price should drop to the 7D range...

So if a used 1D3 is $2000-2500 versus the ~$1700 for a 7D which do you get?

if the 7D has fast AF tracking like the 1D I will be keeping the 7D, if not then I will be getting rid of it and getting the 1D3

so the AF speed is the key for me

Something that hasn't been mentioned. What about something to entice users who haven't bought a camera in a couple of years.

I've got a 30D, and wasn't interested in the slightest by either the 40D or 50D. The 60D doesn't get me going either. The 7D has me thinking. I'm not going to jump right away, but maybe within 12 months or so I could. A 7D/30D pairing could be pretty good duo.

There's enough upgrade there to make me think, but I don't feel I shoot enough or have the needs to jump (or the means) to the 5D or 1D3.
