Comparison: 70-300 IS vs. 70-200 f/4 IS + 1.4x TC on a crop body?

Maybe it's comparing apples and oranges but I'm just curious: Which is sharper wide open at the longest focal length on a crop body? The EF 70-300mm 4.0-5.6 IS USM or the EF 70-200 f/4 IS with a 1.4x TC?

I know that the 70-200 f/4 IS is an incredibly good lens but I don't know how much a 1.4x TC would affect the image quality.

Sample-images appreciated!

a lot of the test are done at 280mm for the L..L wins...the 70-300mm isn't much of a step up from your 55-250...if you already know you'll need a TC maybe you should look at a longer lens?...400mm f5.6? or 100-400mm? maybe?

I'm quite happy with the focal range of the nifty-twofifty since I'm not infected with the birding virus. (yet?)

Wow, the images of the 70-200 f/4 look extremely sharp to me, even with the TC. Really impressive. I also had a look at the link to the-digital-picture.com (external link) that lightrules provided on the page and it looks like the 70-200 even takes a 2x TC well (although no AF in that configuration, or at least not for cameras I can afford ;)).

I don't know about the 70-300... It's much cheaper but I don't think it would be much of an upgrade for me. Might be slightly sharper than the nifty but two of the main problems I have with the nifty are the crappy AF and the rotating front element. The 70-300 isn't much better in that sense so I'm asking myself if I should just save a bit and get the 70-200 some day instead...

yeah i wouldn't upgrade to the 70-300mm if i were you...i'd either go 70-200f4IS or something longer than that if you need longer reach...
