I have been looking and found that the 7D is not very well sealed just by looking at this illustration.

If you look at the red these are seals and the green is tighter tolerance butt or lap joints in the body seams.

Here's the rub..... look at the shutter button and the wheel above it or the new function button. No seals just tighter tolerances.

Now look at the pop up flash there is no green or red. If I were to guess I would think this body is going to leak at the shutter button and the pop up flash, so folks better bag this baby or they may be very upset with the repair bill.

Not looking to stir up a mess just what I see in the Canon pictures of the seals for the 7D.

Probably something similar to the 5DMKII...which is to say half-arsed compared to the 1 series or the Nikon D3/D700...

Im pretty sure this is exactly what will make me keep my 1D2N instead of selling it for this.

Looks along the same lines as the 5D and just called weather resistant, not weather sealed. Better than my 30D though. Thanks for the link.

Canon uses the same language to describe the seals of the 7D as they do for the 5D2: "Equivalent" to the 1N...and they were always vague about that.

Canon states the 5D MKII can handle 10 mm rain in 3 minutes. I'll bring mine out in a drizzle without worrying about it, but nothing too serious. Frankly, I don't love standing out in the rain, so I think the camera and I can handle about the same amounts of rain. ;)

I'm always curious as to why they are comparing them to the 1N and not any of the 1D line.

Unless you've seen the same diagrams for the 5D2, xxD, and the 1Dx bodies... it's hard to make a determination of whether the 7D is or isn't more "weather resistant" than another body. It's likely better than the xxD, but no one knows. :D

I personally don't see the point of sealing the pop-up flash when the pop-up flash doesn't lead anywhere. It's just an external piece that is attached and hinged. What would be the point of sealing the seams to the pop-up flash?

In any case, shooters who need better protection know they can't settle for anything less than the 1D bodies. When their livelihood depends on the camera being able to withstand torrential rainfall, they know to pony up the money for it.

I don't think anyone is disillusioned enough to think the 7D has the weather sealing of 1D bodies. The literature certainly doesn't make such claims.

I don't believe this to be correct, and challenge you to find where Canon says such as thing.

Ooooh, I love a challenge.

Multiple sites reported that spec. You can believe it, or not, either is OK.

Multiple sites, but not a single one of them has been a Canon site? The only site I'm aware of that published that spec is dpreview. What did Canon have to say about weather sealing when users of the 5D2 started sending in dead cameras because of moisture?

It's my understanding that the 1N was not as well sealed as the 1V, or 1D. I imagine that the new 7D does NOT compare favorably to the 1D with regards to the weather-sealing.

I imagine it's just the closest comparison. Saying it has "considerably less weather sealing than a 1D" doesn't sound as encouraging. ;)
