I wonder if someone can help me. I am hoping to purchase a Gitzo tripod, ideally the GT3540XLS as i have heard or rather read great things about this particular model. However, i am stuggling to find it in stock. Chances are it has been replaced/succeeded and or renamed; can anyone help me to find what this model is now called?

Thanks in advance.

A.

Any idea what the x stands for? I have found a stockist in the UK but no X in the model number http://www.warehouseexpress.com …ate-long-version/p1026504 (external link)

Thanks again.

Xtralong! It's 78" tall where the GT3541LS is 57.5" tall.

Is there meant to be any extra stability by having extra length kept within the tubes, or can i just save myself £50 and go with the LS- sorry for all the questions but the Gitzo range just baffles me, but i know they are the best :)

No problem, they're both rated the same...3 series are good for 39 lbs load capacity and are both rated for up to a 500mm lens.

I'm 5'11" and a GT3530LS is just a bit too tall for me when fully extended and camera mounted on a gimbal head. You should determine which model you need based on how tall you are or if you will be frequently be shooting from a hillside (w/ the tripod below your feet) :-)

Thanks for all your responses Tim. I am too 5'11 and shoot with the manfro 055xprob; the height of which does what i require so i think i will be safe with the GT3530LS- I am amazed that it is 700 grams lighter than my manfro but over two and half times stronger- cant wait to work with such a rock of a platform. Now all i need do is find one in stock :)

Not a problem, here's the specs for each pod:

GT3541LS wrote:
Load Capacity: 39.6 lbs
Maximum Height: 57.5"
Minimum Height: 3.9"
Folded Length: 21.7"
Head Attachment Fitting: 3/8"
Weight: 3.8 lbs

GT3530LS wrote:

Minimum Height: 4.3"
Folded Length: 26.4"
Head Attachment Fitting: 3/8"
Weight: 4 lbs

The 3530LS is a bit longer when folded due to the fact that it 3 leg sections compared to the 4 sections of the 3541LS. If you need to travel w/ your tripod, you may want to consider the difference in "folded length". :-)

I have a sort of similar question, given I ordered a Gitzo GT3530LS today, an Arca-Swiss Monoball Z1 Ballhead, and a couple of Wimberley plates for my big lenses; but what would be the best quick release plate for my 5D2?

You want an L plate which will allow you to place the camera in "portrait" orientation while still over the center of the tripod (maintaining proper balance)

Not sure what's available in country for you but Kirk and RRS make very nice L plates.

Kirk is easy to source over here, RRS isnt which is a shame. RRS and Markins would cash in if they signed up to warehouse express as its UK retailer.

Amazingly, I actually had to source the Arca-Swiss Monoball Z1 Ballhead and the Wimberley plates from the States! Do an amazon uk search for yourself, and you will see what returns as hits.

Sort of the same with google.co.uk; Warehouse express were out of stock for everything btw before you check them out! Hopeless!

i'd stick with RRS or wimberly for plates. in the event you decide to use the RRS flip lever release -- and that's what i did -- they are the only plates that are machined to exact spec.

Also, the GT3541LS four legged Gitzo's fold up smaller
than the GT3530LS three legged ones, if that's important to you.

You mean Kirk gear? I didnt check the stock levels, they dont list the 5d plate now, just the 5d2 which is fair enough i guess. I am sure i will be able to source one from somewhere.
