I only have a JPG version of this picture, since I needed the large buffer for continuous shooting (the XSi slows down after a few RAW shots).

I want to fix the blown highlights on the end of the matchstick. I can't get rid of the bright white unless I "paint" over it, which looks artificial. Any ideas?

Feel free to post edited versions, and how they were done....

How low do you want the end of the matchstick to be?
I just lowered it enough to get rid of the blown highlights.
I used ACR 5.4 and used the adjustment brush sized to just cover the matchstick
Set exposure to -0.45 with automask turned on and just did one quick run across the matchstick end. (attached a quick screen cap to illustrate.
A little degradation occurred on the photo since it is a resave, but you could do it yourself easy with the original jpg.
