You might want to have a look at Breezebrowser Pro. It does excellent RAW conversions but I am not happy with the UI to get to that point. It has a number of other utilities that come in handy and it load as fast or faster than any of the other RAW browsers out there, imo.
Failing that have a look at the following chart. It has a very comprehensive list of programs with links that you can review at your leisure.

Bridge is just too slow of a solution to do this for me, even at the CS4 level.
Wow, a blast from the past! RSE?
DPP has two methods of reviewing and ranking images, as 1nt2str outlined above in which you get to see a conversion from the RAW but because of the need to convert each shot it is slow, and the Quick Check tool which uses the embedded jpg which you can display at fit-to-screen, 50% zoom or 100%.
Like S.S. I also have Breeze Browser which I use primarily to review and select images while they are still in the card-reader, something LR does abysmally, and then once I have made up my mind a right-click command hands them off to LR's Import dialog. BB's conversion is very much like ZB's but I have never used it, mainly because the preview display is small and unzoomable.
Bottom line? Mortgage your house, car, wife or dog and get LR. You may find it all you need for most pix and for the others it will integrate well with CS3.
