Thanks for reading..
My whole workflow is now based on RSE's workflow.

I could point RSE to a folder; and then run through a quick _full screen_ slideshow to rank all my pictures.

Now that I'm without RSE; I'm at a loss for determining which shots are the best in a huge heaping pile of raw files quickly.

So far I've tried
DPP
Raw Therapee
And just downloaded AcDsee Pro (slideshow; but you can't RANK during the slideshow)

Is it so hard to find ONE app for viewing a RAW file (not the cheesey embedded .jpg) full screen to rank the pictures; and to process the raw files in the same app??

I have CS3; but don't want to shell out for CS4.

Thank you for any suggestions you have!

In DPP you can apply 3 different "checkmarks" to your images. Does that not work for you?
I load all images into DPP -> "Select all" -> "Edit View". In there you can quickly navigate the images with the up/down arrows and use Ctrl+1/2/3 to mark the images. Go back into main view, "Clear all" and then "Edit" -> "Select only checkmark 1/2/3" images.

What is the meaning of "cheesey" in this context? What is your problem with the embedded JPEG?

There IS a problem with the embedded JPEG, namely that it does not reflect the adjustments you have done in DPP. However, DPP's adjustments are stored in a Canon proprietory and undocmented format, thus no other program but DPP (not even Zoom Browser) shows the adjusted image.

Otherwise, Zoom Browser is not bad. If you like ACR, you can use Adobe's Bridge, that shows the adjusted version.

Well... the company that made Raw Shooter was bought out by Adobe, and any useful technology incorporated into LR, so why not just go the LR route?

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

Like Panopeeper wrote, how about Bridge CS3? You can view the files at a large size rather than thumbnails and rank them, then open them in ACR to edit.

You might want to have a look at Breezebrowser Pro. It does excellent RAW conversions but I am not happy with the UI to get to that point. It has a number of other utilities that come in handy and it load as fast or faster than any of the other RAW browsers out there, imo.

Failing that have a look at the following chart. It has a very comprehensive list of programs with links that you can review at your leisure.

Bridge is just too slow of a solution to do this for me, even at the CS4 level.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

Wow, a blast from the past! RSE?

DPP has two methods of reviewing and ranking images, as 1nt2str outlined above in which you get to see a conversion from the RAW but because of the need to convert each shot it is slow, and the Quick Check tool which uses the embedded jpg which you can display at fit-to-screen, 50% zoom or 100%.

Like S.S. I also have Breeze Browser which I use primarily to review and select images while they are still in the card-reader, something LR does abysmally, and then once I have made up my mind a right-click command hands them off to LR's Import dialog. BB's conversion is very much like ZB's but I have never used it, mainly because the preview display is small and unzoomable.

Bottom line? Mortgage your house, car, wife or dog and get LR. You may find it all you need for most pix and for the others it will integrate well with CS3.

Why not just upgrade you CS3 ACR to 4.6 which will support the 50D. Then you can use Bridge to rate your files.
