It means that a 2400x1600 section of the original was cropped out. That cropped image was processed then shrunk to 1/4 its original size so that it would look right on the Web.

This is the original image, so one can see just how small an area was cropped out.

Yes, Frank explained it well.

Switching from 1 to 2, as well as activating AI servo in lieu of One Shot AF, will involve many button presses. If you wish to take both perched and take off shots, you better be in AI servo + Single Point (expanded or not) in the first place. AI servo works well at static subjects too, as long as you don't recompose or take the active AF point away from the part of the bird you wish to be in focus. You can of course program the C1, C2 and C3 buttons to have the right settings for active and static subjects, though I doubt you can react fast enough once the bird decided to take off.

In the manual it says you can program the DOF preview button to switch between AI servo and oneshot.

Wow.... I missed that... that would be a very useful function!

Just about every button should be programmable in my opinion, much like controllers on game consoles.

Thank you all for the responses.

My interest in photography mainly lies with "anything that involves movement".

Mainly sport, followed by birds and then transportation. (NOT MOTOR SPORT).

These setting looks as if they will be a great help to me.
I am glad the question I asked has been of help to more the just myself.
