1/3 vs 1/2, why???

Well, I'm referring to the dof of lenses. When I was shooting film, the general rule is 1/3 in front of my subject (or focus point) and 2/3 behind is the dof for sharpest image. Now that I moved to dslr, the auto focus lens seems to be right in the middle of the the dof, instead of 1/3.
Could some of you experts help me with this puzzle?

That old "1/3 in front, 2/3 in back" was never all that accurate. Go to DOFmaster.com and play with their online DOF calculator to get the real scoop.
