I am going on a wildlife/birding photography trip in a week. Right now I have canon's 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM and I just havnt got what I wanted out of it. I will mainly be shooting birds but also some wildlife. So here's the Qs...

#1 Should I keep lens and buy 400/5.6L+TC
or
#2 Should I sell lens and buy 100-400L (maby TC?).
or
#3 Should I sell lens and buy 300/4L+TC.

Those are my three lens choices and do not plan on going more exspensive than that. (Other brand suggestions welcome.)

Thanks,
BB

Tough decision! I think that's why no one has replied; it's too close to call.

But I'll man up and give you my input...

...I'm not sure.

[I suppose I'd lean toward options 1 or 2, even though I myself have the 300 f4 IS.]

Personally I like the idea of the 400 f/5.6 the most... but that is a pretty tough call ;) I think you can't go that wrong either way.

Close call...maybe consider other possible uses for the new lens in your decision making process?

without knowing the conditions you are shooting in the zoom is the best choice. however, if you are shooting in good light and you'll be at 400mm most of the time the 400L might be a better choice.

How many camera's do you have? If you only have one, I'd pick Option #2. If you have 2 camera's, I'd pick Option #1. Put 70-300 on one camera, and 400L prime on the other. Oh, unless you have a 1 Series camera, you can forget about AF on the 400L prime or 100-400L Zoom with a TC.

I'm going to go against the grain and say the 300L + TC as it gives you IS, versatility, and macro ability.

The 1-400 is nice but not the same as the 300L and the 400 is great for birding but as someone said, no af with tc on a non 1d body and it's pretty much a one trick pony (birding)

good luck.

sigma 150-500mm os?...i think that's where i'm leaning when i do eventually upgrade my 70-300mm...i feel like the more reach the better, and it's budget friendly...
