External USB drive. I am doing a full reformat of a 1TB Seagate external drive using the Computer Management utility. The disk is shown "Formatting" in the status column of Computer Management.

Ah, OK. I used Paragon Partition Manager, and it went fine. Yours OK now?

cheers, juice (Canon shooter, Elinchrom lighter, but pretty much agnostic on brands.)

It's still formatting. God knows how long it will take for a full format (not quick format).

Even better a can of beer!

I like that idea, that way i get an extra present at Christmas time. it might be hard to explain why i want to keep my lens in the fridge though.

Mate, you swap them back on Christmas Eve, and have an early present of a can of beer :-)

It is perfectly normal for a format to take that long. It is essentially checking the integrity of the drive.

I knew it would take a long time.

The thing I'm not sure about is whether there should be a status bar saying how far through the process it is (and perhaps with an estimate for how long to go).

It's often a lens issue, but Richard got that when his mkIII shutter died.

The only other thing you could try is cleaning the contacts on your camera and lenses otherwise you'll need to send it in to Canon.

Probably not the answer you are wanting Nic. Same thing happened to me with a 1D Mark III recently and they ended up replacing the shutter assembly for nix.

Hopefully you've got a backup body.

*runs into the corner* Nope, no back up body.

I'll give canon a call now and see what they say.

I hope not too but shutters do have a life span. Think of it this way if you have to get it replaced your camera will be as good as new.

PS you paid a crap load of money!
