Ummm, 1DmkIV?

Gonna wait to see if I get a scholarship from the government. If so, I'll get a Mark IV (comfortably). Otherwise, it's stretching my finances a bit too much to be honest. I gotta face reality: I'm a student who does not have a full-time job, does not do photography professionally. Dropping 6.5k on a camera body is a bit too rich for me at the moment.

On the other hand, I've only got four lenses at the moment and I had been wanting a couple of more (good) primes for awhile.

Well, if you need cash, I'd be willing to buy the 50L off you. :p

I'm not letting your nerdy hands on it

I'm serious considering jumping on that 16-35 II. If it has a critical flaw (AF doesn't work etc.), then I can get a refund by law. For something more minor, I can always sell it off and I'm sure I could do better than that BIN price. Heck, that infamous 16-35 certainly went off and I made a healthy profit in the end.

Do it Colin!

I think Richard's estimate is pretty correct, unfortunately.

It's not very nice is it. They know that people will pay that much so that they can get files back..

Not explicitly. Instead, I let him come to my office at uni and made him thoroughly inspect it, which included making him take shots in scenarios which would show the focus shift. He didn't notice anything at all, and that was good enough for me. Moreover, I gave him a generous return policy incase he changed his mind for any reason.

That works for everyone.

Just a random question. What gear do you have? You go on about lenses and bodies a lot but I'm just trying to think

I've gathered... 5D, 50D, 30D... 10-22? 70-200/2.8L? What else? :p

Edit: And that 16-35L finishes tonight so you better make a decision before someone else does!

I don't think $1000 is unreasonable though. These people are specialists offering specialist services. People in these kinds of niche professions are bound to expect (and make) a good deal of cash per hour of service.

But back to the problem at hand, I do hope Richard can get his data back. Potentially losing years worth of photos is absolutely gut-wrenching.

What gear currently? 50D, 30D. Sold the 5D last week in order to facilitate the 5D II. Lenses: 10-22, 17-55, 70-200, 85/1.8. Lenses I'm interested in: 16-35, 24-70, 35L, 50L. Give me a shout if you get over your new 24-70.

That's cool. Are you planning on keeping any of the EF-S glass when you go full frame? I'm going to suggest no because you want the 24-70 and 16-35, but some people just don't want to part with their 17-55 :p

I highly doubt I'll get over it!

Recovery comopanies are just white collar towies.
You need it and they have the skillz. Their skills are worth as much as the information you've lost.

I'm actually keeping my EF-S lenses, because I'm not completely moving to FF. I plan on keeping both formats, as I get two FoVs for each common prime. And I think I've mentioned this before, but my main reason for going FF is to make my 70-200 more useful. I love my 70-200L to death - great bokeh, great performance even wide-open, great stabilisation, fast AF, but just hate the FL on APS-C. I always get cut-off at 70mm and I rarely use 200mm. On the 5D II, this will become my main portrait/events lens (which is why I so wish the 5D II had better peripheral AF points).

Yes, I don't want to part with my 17-55 either.

Richard, what do we do with this sentence? :-)

I got my data (600GB) back off my screwed up primary drive with http://www.easeus.com/ (external link) - if you want it, let me know.

What do we do with that sentence? We wrap it in a diarrhoea stained mankini and tie it around Colon's head.

Thanks for that Mic - I've downloaded it and going through complete recovery. It looks like the files are there - estimated remaining time about 18 hours.

Makes sense. I've loved my 70-200 even more since I've had my 1D2. That extra bit of width makes such a difference. But at the same time, I can't wait to have my 24-70. The 70-200 is nice to use but it's always too long

If I stuck with APS-C (which I very well may have, through the 7D, if I didn't get the 1D2) then I would definitely have gone for the 17-55 rather than the 24-70. A cousin-in-law has the 17-55 and it's a very nice lens.
