I could be wrong, but I think he meant an old Canon D60. :)

Correct :-)

I've taken the drive into a recovery place to see if they can recover usable files. I spoke to another one before them and when I told him about the recovered files not being readable I was told it doesn't look good.

Yeah :-( Haven't got any floating around on DVD or anything?

cheers, juice (Canon shooter, Elinchrom lighter, but pretty much agnostic on brands.)

Hey guys,

I hate to brag about my equipment on a public forum. It's one of the reasons I don't have a gear list.

I have one for the purpose so I have less people querying me, "WHAT DO YOU HAVE?" when it comes to asking for assistance from the public.

Very nice and concise. None of that long list bs ;)

I'll answer but if the photo's good why should it matter. I'm in it for great images more than gear lust.

Al, you'll love the 1D2 as soon as you get it. It's amazing.

Hope something works soon, Richard :( Terrible luck.

I do love them. The AF and exposure ability on them is great and only gets better with the series III. I've been lucky enough to run with one for a week and it was a fantastic experience.

Sometimes it's helpful to know what someones shooting with. It's not always about the good photos either.

Yes understandable but I guess it would apply to more technical problems :)
Hope you get your 1D2 soon if you haven't gotten it yet :D

After that, we should have a POTNAC 1D2 congregation.

The only saving grace is that I have pretty much all finished images stored on SmugMug but not at full resolution - they're at 3000 pixel maximum side size.

Still reasonable for most prints.

I'm about ready to shoot Seagate and their customer disservice.

The whole problem occured when I was doing a regular back up from my working 1TB drive that has all my photos on it to a Seagate 1TB external drive. The external drive failed and I tried to resurrect it by reformatting it. I mistakenly tried to reformat the internal drive so I ended up with 1 inoperable (Seagate) drive and 1 with nothing on it (internal).

The Seagate drive is one I had replaced under warranty. I rang Seagate and had to go to Singapore for their customer service. I rang to request a refund. They refused and said I had to go back to where I bought it. I rang CPL (where I bought it from) and they said that because Seagate had replaced it once I had to deal with them.

I can't get through to anyone at Seagate locally and the drones in the Seagate call centre can't/won't deviate from their line about not being able to give me a refund.

your not alone.. I lost 2x 500gigs recently.... Both had been replaced once.. quite sad, They were the only brand drive not to have let me down in 10 odd yrs... :( There isnt much left to choose from...

I just ran a backup of all my photos, i'm sure you've reminded a few of us to do the same! I also keep an off site backup at my parents house which is regualry syncronised when they visit. Hard drives breaking down is a real problem and if both primary and backup are on one PC then you also have to worry about lightning strikes and viruses, argh!

If it's any consolation the person I spoke to do the recovery said that the only brands of hard drives he recommends are Western Digital and Hitachi.

If my experience helps others then that's something.

Backing up 1TB to DVD is a long and tedious process. I picked up a 1.5TB WD Essentials external drive from Officeworks for $159 this morning.

I've only ever had Maxtors' fail on me, and I've got drives of most brands (Seagate, WD, Maxtor, Lacie, Hitachi). Personally I'm quite obsessive about backup, since I have lost an entire drive worth of stuff before. I've always got three copies of everything (one internal drive and two externals), and all my important photos are backed up in full-res on Smugmug. I'm currently backing up everything on two 1.5TB drives; I'd never consider DVDs. Too tedious!
