Backing up 1TB to DVD is a long and tedious process. I picked up a 1.5TB WD Essentials external drive from Officeworks for $159 this morning.

I have a 2TB WD Mirrored at the moment.

Got that after my Seagate failed on me. But managed to recover half of the content (the important half).

The only photos that were important I don't have on Smugmug were the events I did for North Melbourne FC this year.

If it's any consolation the person I spoke to do the recovery said that the only brands of hard drives he recommends are Western Digital and Hitachi.

Sadly I've lost PLENTY of WD's at work, but their warranty system is great:rolleyes:
havent tried Hitachi, but what else is there? Maxtor are dung too..

Maybe I should go back to film and be done with all this new-fangled technology.

Bloody odd eh?

We came from a media that could last 100 years to something that needs replacing every 2-5.

Bulldust.

And DVDs are very error-prone as well, you just don't find out until you go tot do a restore.

How do you back the film up online?

I just ordered 2x 1.5 TB externals myself to backup pics, and important gear... One is going to work and one at mum and dads place... Also going thru and sorting out dozens of DVD's I have here with... with.. LOTS of mixed up gear on it, from several PC rebuilds.

Isn't there a slot in the 'puter you just feed the negatives into?

I'm serious considering jumping on that 16-35 II. If it has a critical flaw (AF doesn't work etc.), then I can get a refund by law.......

Ummm.........Sure about that with second-hand gear ??? ??

I'm not having too much joy. All the files the recovery program is recovering are corrupt.

Ditto !!

I'm currently backing up everything on two 1.5TB drives; I'd never consider DVDs. Too tedious!

DVD's are even less reliable then HDD's !!!

IMHO, There is only one backup-program worth considering and that is http://www.filehamster.com/ (external link)

It used to be Freeware, you may still be able to track down the Freeware version, but even so, don't even think about it, JUST BUY FILE HAMSTER !!!

Point it to a directory where you keep your stuff, and AS SOON AS any file in there is changed it is immediately and automatically backed up to your backup location. DID I MENTION, IMMEDIATELY AND AUTOMATICALLY ??

You mean the one that turns them into 1s and 0s, the cause of this whole mess?

BlackShadow... bummer to hear about the drive. Sorry haven't read all the pages of history but assuming the contents are important I'd definitely be using professional data recovery - its amazing what they can do and this should be relatively simple given your disk isn't physically damaged.

PS. I always back up to two external disks with and rotate them offsite.... so i'm as good as my last offsite backup... providing Sydney doesn't get nuked ;)

Thanks Rai.

You might say the contents are important - all my photos from late 2005 until now.

It is in for pro data recovery. It will take them between 24 and 48 hours to give me the verdict.
