Is the 50/1.8 on a 400D an adequate lens for a wedding shoot for friends who aren't expecting brilliance or should I bite the bullet and shell out the extra $$ on the 1.4 version?

I have until February to buy.

The main problem with the 50/1.8 is the AF. The lack of a USM means it's not particularly fast, and more importantly, it's not particularly accurate. It's a bit of a hit and miss really. For a wedding, where you'll want to use large apertures at times, I wouldn't touch it.

On the other hand, the image quality is quite fantastic (if you get a good copy).

Overall, I'd shell out the extra money for a 1.4. Or even better, a Siggy 1.4.

Ahhh, right. Nah, no firesale here. But if I do hit financial strife I'll let you know!

I am the female type, at least last time I checked :P My real name is in my sig (Kinnon), but that is rather masculine as well. I've been getting it all my life so it's all good!

Maybe I need to have words to the title fairy if they still hang around these days.....

Hmmm wouldn't hold my breath waiting for the title fairy to come and bless you. Rumour has it that the title fairy is being held hostage by someone with Horton in their user name.
Although you could be given a title of Little Lady Blue,if you did hold your breath.

Your problem is (if you buy new) that you would buy the 1.8 and find your not happy with it, you would blow money tryin to sell it again..

If you bought the 1.4, you would always be happy...

but the 85/1.2L is a completely different beastie, am really liking mine so far.

Favourite lens ever, but Al seems to have STOLEN it.

B&H have the 50mm f/1.4 for $360, it's not a big decision.

Definitely considering going to the 1.4. Two reasons, slightly more light gathering ability (about 1/3 of a stop), and USM focus motor. The 50/1.8 has a noisy and somewhat unreliable focus motor in low light conditions. Couple that with the 400D's fairly ordinary AF and you have a solution less than ideal for low light work.

A bit of tax from last night.

Green Day

#3 FTW! that shot is fantastic... Can you share the settings of that one? I am intrigued.

Heres a little tax of my own... this is our little baby parrot. Just turned 1 year old last week. Hes the biggest sook, even to the point that he lets you hold him on his back and give him a scratch.

Speaking of B&H, if I buy a 5D II there, what else apart from the shipping will I be slapped with? GST and that's it right?

Damn. That brings the price too close to buying new-grey here. If only the dollar was at parity..

PS, how do they charge the GST? Surely it doesn't get charged at checkout.. right?

From the little I've read, Customs will call you up and ask for a credit card number to charge it to.

You will get a letter from The gov, i think its usually the Customs people from memory... They will hold it there until you pay them. Thats how its worked with carparts I've got from USA.

Very hard to get around. Unless you get it sent out of box, with no manuals etc, get them sent seperately and have it marked as REPAIR.. ;) Then get box/manuals shipped 2 weeks later.

Thanks Scott!

It was taken with a 5D and 16-35 f2.8L II and shot in manual no flash. ISO 1600, f3.2, 1/160 @ 16mm.
