Yesterday my third unlucky event of December happened - the mirror fell off my 5D during a shoot.

They say bad luck comes in threes so with being made redundant, having a hard drive fail and losing my photo archive (subsequently recovered for $1000) and now having my 5D die that makes three.

I've had a Decemberus horribulus. Hopefully better days ahead.

The mirror issue is well documented and Canon do a free fix. I'll be calling CPS tomorrow and hopefully they can organise a FF loaner while the 5D is being fixed. It would be terrible if they offered me a 1Ds Mark III for a while...

Yes, let's hope that doesn't happen, or I'll have to come around have a play with it...

cheers, juice (Canon shooter, Elinchrom lighter, but pretty much agnostic on brands.)

Richard, as long as you have your health everything else is bearable: annoying, frustrating, financially painful but bearable that being said hopefully 2010 will make up for your shocking end to 2009!

Thanks!

It's very true about health, but if things keep going like this my mental health will be shot to bits (some might say it already is)!

That's a fair point :-)

I'd pay to be not sick right now!

Alright, tips please. My lighting gear came today (apparently AusPost deliver on the Sunday before Christmas - who knew?) and with the umbrella bracket attached to the light stand, I can't mount my flash because the flash is mounted on the CTR-301P and that has a tripod thread, rather than a cold shoe. None of my flashes have a PC sync port so I can't just plug it into my CTR-301P like that. So what do I do? :)

Flash Zebra sells hotshoe mounts that have hot shoe feet as well with the PC port.

I'll have a look but I don't want to have to wait a few weeks just to use it. Might try a DIY to add a PC sync port to one of my YN460's for now because I also don't want to make the new $25 umbrella bracket useless.

If the hot shoe mount of the bracket had a screw mount then I'd be fine, or if I could make one somehow?

Question for the wedding photography people - what lenses and other accessories would you consider the minimum requirements for shooting a wedding? I've decided to bite the bullet and buy some proper gear before I do a friends wedding in March, even though they know not to expect brilliance and I want to do a decent job of it.

Never judge a person till you walk a mile in their shoes - by then it won't matter. You are a mile away and they have no shoes.

Whatever gear you use, make sure you have a backup body.

For lenses, you want them to be as fast as they can be in their class. So for zooms, that's f/2.8 constant if possible. Many wedding togs' also use a twin-body twin-primes setup. The most canonical example of this is the 35/85L combination, although there are people who do 24/135L, 24/85L etc. A flash is also useful.

For your 400D, I can't think of a better zoom lens to do a wedding than a 17-55 f/2.8 IS.
