50D = not enough new features to be worthy of the upgrade.

5D = superior image quality, but don't forget the cost of picking up new lenses to go with it. Also, if you don't shoot in low light very often, or don't have primes that you need full-frame FOV to use properly, the extra image quality isn't likely to effect your end product a whole lot.

I suppose I should also ask what lenses you're currently using, to give you a properly rounded answer to your question ...

And also what exactly it is about your 40D that is currently letting you down ...

Honestly, I don't think you'd notice much difference with either body for what you do. And that's a very cool image btw.

Ok, so your 17-85 would need to be replaced if you go full-frame.

$$$

My assessment? You don't need to upgrade. Go get a fisheye for your 40D if the effect is important to you. Much cheaper :)

for just static subjects where you can keep the ISOs low and you're looking for a lot of DOF you really won't see much difference. The big difference between the 40D and 5D is the 5D has thinner DOF with a slighter sharper AA filter, so limited DOF shots have more "pop". For landscaping you're stopping down so you wan't see a huge difference. You'd get 2 more MP (20% increase which isn't much) and slightly sharper images. Plus you could stop down more w/o diffraction, so the sharpness would be doubled (AA filter is sharper AND less diffraction). But that wouldn't be a HUGE difference.

40D might just be the better camera than the 50D depending on who you talk to. For sure I would not upgrade from a 40D to a 50D. I would go for a 5D over 40D if I didn't have to shoot sports.

The 5D has superior image quality by a long ways, especially in the shadows. The 40D is better of the two for sports. I have both a 40D, a 5D and a 1Dmk3.

I have the 40D and agree that the 50D isn't a worthwhile upgrade. I skipped it and will be getting the 7D. There are some reviews on line, from pre production samples. Full reviews on production units should be out by mid October.

I was immediately amazed at the images when I first opened them on my PC. I had a 40D previously.

There is something about FF images and the 5D. Some of it has to do with the weaker AA filter, for sure.

With that said, I have also found my lenses focus much more accurately and consistently with the 5D then they did with my 40D, especially the Tamron and to a lesser extent, my 85/1.8

The outer points on the 5D are much malinged but, in my personal experience, if there is enough light to hand hold and get an acceptably sharp image at ISO1600, the 5D will focus well (enough) with the outer points. I use them often when shooting shows.

The only thing I miss about my 40D are the >6 fps (used extrememly rarely) and less reach with my 70-200. The latter I am going to have to do something about, sooner or later. I do not like to crop in post, preferring to get it right in the camera. I also find not having the ISO in the viewfinder a minor PITA.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

Since you paint with light and use long exposures do you notice pattern noise? I have a number of July 4th fireworks shots that have pattern noise when opening up the shadows a little. Shutter is 8 secs at ISO 100 with my 50D. Anyway I'd go for the new 7D which appears not to have this problem. Other than that I really like my 50D... it's so underrated.

I would skip the 50D if you already have a 40D.
