Best suggestion I ever received when I asked the same question was to get glass. I doubt you'll notice much IQ difference from a 40D to a 50D. I do think there's a difference in the 5D, but I'm biased. I also had the lenses that would work on the 5D prior to getting it. I think you'll have more fun with a fisheye than any new camera body.

i only have the standard lens 17 - 85mm and 50mm f/1.8... condisering a 10mm fisheye or 15mm depending if i get a 5d body or not... or even that tokina 10 - 20mm fisheye/ wideangle one...

Glass is much more important than the camera body and your collection has a lot of room for improvement. The 40D is a capable camera so I'd spend money on upgrading the glass first. And maybe other accessories. How good is your tripod, for example. Or maybe you'd get mileage from one of the electronic shutter releases with built in timer.

My guess is it probably wouldn't based on the fact that it's a different class sensor.

The 7D will likely push down the prices on cameras in the xxD series. The only thing that's going to push down prices on the 5D is going to be either a price drop on the 5D mkII or the announcement of a 5DmkIII. You have much better chances of getting money for a 5D by winning the lottery.

I have the 40D and agree that the 50D isn't a worthwhile upgrade. I skipped it and will be getting the 7D. There are some reviews on line, from pre production samples. Full reviews on production units should be out by mid October.
