Carrying Camera and Neckstrap Question

I like to carry my camera with the neckstrap around my neck and over to my side.
The camera is about hip high.
The question I have is:
What do I have to do so that my lens isn't sticking way out and hitting something or someone walking into it?
I would like the lens to hang towards the ground.
Is there an accessory or different strap?
Thanks in advance

The BlackRapid R-Strap will solve that problem for you. The camera hangs to your side with the lens resting against your hip/butt and faces down. No problems with it hitting people or objects and doesn't bounce when walking.

Buy a big heavy expensive lens. Problem solved.

Or just rotate the camera so it's closer to your back than your side?

I put it over my shoulder (instead of around my neck) and push it towards my back. This works for me especially when I'm shooting with 2 bodies.

Why, yes. At the right length, the lens nestles into the small of your back.

I just hang the camera "backwards" so the bottom of the camera faces away from me. I have to twist the straps when I bring it up, no big deal. I am a tall man, and use a long strap adjusted out all the way, so there is plenty of strap to twist.
I sure like the idea of banging the bottom of the camera against a door frame rather than the prism or the lens.

I have a 1Dmk2n and use a black rapid strap. It works great for a 100-400 as well as a 24-70. Easy to bring camera up to shooting level.

When using a heavier lens like the 70-200 f/2.8 or the 100-400, how hard is it on the lens mount to let the camera hang with the lens facing down? I do avoid holding the camera with the lens unsupported in the shooting position.

You have to support the lens in shooting position more for steadiness than frets over the lens mount.

The mount is very hardy. Don't worry about the mount with any lens that doesn't have a hand grip.

I do exactly the same thing.

Major Difference: I'm not tall but it hasn't hindered my shooting at all. This is especially a good technique if you're in tight quarters (crowds, stores, etc...)
