Does anyone know of an adapter that would do this? Or are Elinchrom modifiers unhackable? :)

Jerry Kacey (kaceyenterprises.com) makes an Elinchrom adapter that will allow you to use Elinchrom modifiers with Alien Bees strobes. Check his site.

I lost where that other thread was that discussed this, but was there any conclusions on whether an Elinchrom strobe with Elinchrom modifier produces a better result than an Alien Bee with an adaptor that may cause the modifier to sit farther out from the bulb?

Never tested. Never resolved.

He was the first person I thought of :D

I also thought the flashtube was being cut off by the adapter ring so a speedo head might work better, so that's what led to the search for an adapter for it and whether there were alternative AB adapters...

As far as I know there aren't any other adapters being made.

All of my products for AB/WL move the flash tube further forward than a Alien Bee and a standard Alien bee box. Here is a standard AB/WL SB insert and ring shown next to the Eli mount. There is absolutely no way to get the Elinchrome insert closer than that.... It's basically right up against the face of the Bee.

won't they just fit onto a regular ab/wl speedring if you buy it seperately, they're only $25 or $30?

No, they won't. Elinchtom uses a proprietary bayonet mount and standard speed ring's can't be used.

So you can't just buy an Eli softbox, toss their speedring and attach something like this (external link) ?

Unfortunately not Derek. The design of the Elinchrom boxes is such that you can't use other speed rings.

Derek:
That's what I was thinking of doing too (though I'd prefer sticking it on a speedo head because of the flash tube distance). You want Kacey's other adapter...the one I linked the picture of above. Here's a direct link:

$56 which still isn't bad...

What is your concern? There was talk of if the AB with Elinchrom mods will work as well as a Elinchrom with Elinchrom mod. My guess is that this will never be resolved and any testing would most likely end up being brand against brand opinion.
This combo will move the flash tube of a AB further forward than it would be in any other stock AB or aftermarket modifier besides beauty dishes. We have a mount for that as well that will move the flash tube all the way into a Beauty Dish.

Let me also throw this in.....

When I originally raised the issue of testing and comparisons, it was simply from a scientific (geeky measurebator) standpoint. I don't think there is going to be any difference worth talking about; good or bad.

I have no doubt that the light from an Alien Bees strobe firing into an Elinchrom modifier will be beautiful and open up some door for users of Bees that like what they see in Elinchrom modifiers and accessories.

Not only will it allow owners of Bees to use Elinchrom softboxes, octas and strips, but you'll be able to use the wide range of reflectors, grids, barn doors, snoots, etc.

More choices and alternatives for Alien Bees users is a good thing.
