I am currently enrolled in a photo class at my college where the entire course is based on enigmatic, narrative-esque imagery. I was wondering if anyone knew of any specific images or artists that could be useful in help defining what this style of photography suggest.

Hmm..

That's a very subjective and wide spectrum. There are many different styles of photography that can be considered enigmatic. I think it all comes down to personal taste. One for me would be Diane Arbus.

one of my all time favorite photographers is a master of narrative tableaux named Gregory Crewdson (external link). do a google image search and be blown away. his series titled "Twilight" is utterly phenomenal. :)

If this is the guy who was portrayed on Sunday Morning (CBS), I concur. I enjoyed watching him spend a half-million dollars to produce an image. ;)

However, this is just IMHO, but I wouldn't call him enigmatic. To me, he's more Rockwellian. (no, not the photography nutcase, but the artist Normal Rockwell).

Seems to me that the class instructor should give you the name of some photographers, examples or something. Has anyone asked the instructor?
