Hey guys, I'm gonna buy a telezoom lens for my 1000D.

So far, I found 2 possibilities (suggestions are highly appreciated).

The
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5,6 III USM

Or the:

Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS

They're in the same price range, 200-250 euros.
Which is the best?

Thanks for looking!

Any particular reasons to REALLY not choose the 75-300mm? Lack of IS perhaps?

Thats one reason, The other is that optically its pretty much -garbage- whereas the 55-250 is good...

The Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5,6 III USM was my first non kit lens back in the day. I got some good stuff with it, but once I stepped up to better glass I quickly saw a marked improvement in picture quality.

I agree that the 55-250 is supposed to be a higher quality lens but I have not used it at all.

I've owned both (actually my 75-300 was the IS version) and I kept the 55-250 IS lens. I sold my 75-300 IS lens cause it wasn't as sharp as the 55-250 and the 55-250 had much better IS and was smaller. I didn't notice much difference between the max 250mm and 300mm focal lengths of these two lenses.

By the way, if you decide to get the 55-250 IS lens then do yourself a favor and buy a refurbished one from Adorama for $199. It is well worth the $199 and you won't be able to tell the difference from a brand new lens.

55-250. It's a terrific lens - you'll love it.

How about the fact that 75-300mm is typically one of the most disappointing FL range zooms in Canon history? Three generations of lenses with 75-300mm range... read the on line commentary about all of them.

Which is why I could never bring myself to purchase the 70-300mm IS lens. It just seemed like a "better 75-300mm IS" but not that much better. The barrel slop and zoom creep on my 75-300mm IS was terrible. I was lucky to sell it for $400.

Hmm okay I'm convinced - No 75-300mm :D

So is there a better choice than the 55-250mm?

Thanks

if your willing to spend the money, a 70-200 f4L (non IS) would give you an excellent bang for the buck...

i am stuck between a 55-250 is and a 70-200 4 non is, if you can swing the extra money i hear that the 70-200 gets much better IQ FWIW.

I agree with most here...55-250IS...or if you have the money...70-200 F4 Non-IS.
