The orioles hang around most of the summer in the back yard. This year I didn't see them often, just a yellow streak across the window now and then. I set the tripod up in the bathroom window and watched for a long time one morning and this is what I could get.

I used the 100-400 at 400mm. It doesn't hold up to comparison to the other really fine posts in this group, but I thought I'd toss it out there. Thanks for any comments.

I really like that shot Gary ...... something a bit different, eh.

Have you tried a tighter crop and a tad more saturation to bring out a bit more colour ??

Matt.

I'd have to agree with Matt. Crop and inlarge with a bit of colour and your on your way.

Good job and nice first post. I really like pics of birds where they are partially hidden by leaves and other natural objects. They just look more natural. You don't see too many here as it seems most prefer the un-obstructed view of the bird.

I was tempted to boost the saturation a little, but the green looked overdone when I did, and there is quite a bit of yellow in the green. As for tighter crop and enlarge, this is 75% of full crop already, if I remember correctly, and I would have trouble getting it sharp enough. That's probably in my limited knowledge of how to deal with it in PS or ACR. I hate over-sharpened stuff that looks gritty, and quite a bit of mine comes out that way if I go too far.

I'll have to try harder. ;) By the way, there is a lot more saturation on the image than shows here. Not sure what that is about.

Thanks, everyone, for the comments.

that's a good shot to begin with and the oriole is not the easiet bird to shoot as they are so wary.

since you have them, try putting up an oriole feeder. they love oranges as well as grape and strawberry jelly. they come after the hummer nector too.

once you get them feeding reguarrly you have a better chance but still don't ever believe they will be easy to shoot;)

Started with nothing and still have most of it!;)

Gary, I compressed the histogram slightly and did a very slight adjustment in curves, I also increased the cropped size 150% using Photoshop CS4; to get a final result. I didn't sharpen at all.
Hope you like it.

Thanks. I just discovered a problem that will prevent me from working on it anymore, unless I do the jpg. The raw files got inadvertently dumped! :o:( Looks like my dual file system has a flaw. Thanks for the effort.

I upped the color on the jpgs and replaced them. They are a little better, but for some reason there is a big difference between what I see here and on Zen.

I'd have to buy stock in CD production. Not a bad idea, but I'd use DVDs (several).

I'm bating the Jays now, but so far no takers. These are very shy.
