Here's my situation, I'm thinking about selling most of my gear to get a 5DII...as in the 40D, Tokina, one if not both L's.

Here's the question: If you had roughly $1700, given that you only had the 5DII, to buy lenses for the 5DII what would you get?

I was thinking the 35L/24-70L and 200 2.8L.

If you really want the 5DII, save up until you have enough to make up for the difference after selling the 40D and Tokina. If it were me I just wouldn't want to sell either of those Ls in order to get a body. Glass > Body

Forgot to mention that I'm in college haha so there really is no saving up for photography right now ;)

You'll regret selling either of those L's. The 40D isn't exactly junk. I agree with Kaigler.

I'll echo the others about keeping your current set up. Now that that is out of the way...I'd go with something like 24-105/24-70 and a favorite prime like the 135L or 200L. I'd probably pick the 135L because you could add a TC and get good results.

Hang on to your L lenses. Those are wonderful lenses for full frame cameras. Like mike_d said, you will regret selling them and wind up buying the same lenses for more than you bought them for. Then you'll hit yourself with your 5D Mark II one week after the warranty expires and have to pay for the repair.

Why not consider a 5D classic?

Personally I preferred the 135L and a pair of teleconverters to the 70-200L f2.8 IS and I would not get rid of my 24-50L.

Your two zooms will be exceptional on that camera, and the 35L is also very stunning, I used to carry with my 5D either: 35L & 135L or 24-70 & 70-200 2.8 IS. Also 24-70L and 135L was a pretty great combination as well and kept the weight down a bit. I had the 200L 2.8 as well and it's prolly one of the sharpest, clearest lenses ever and pretty nice on a FF but I found I used the 135L a lot more and would carry a 1.4 extender if I wanted a bit more push, the lens is so sharp that I never felt I ever lost anything with the extender on.

when i moved towards FF i realized that i only needed 3 lenses... 24-70/70-200 2.8 is / 85L.

after trying out the 24-70, i realized that the 35L suits me better, the 70-200 2.8 still isnt any better (to my expectations) on the FF, and so i realized that i would just need the 35L, 85L and the 135L. The 5dii's high res sensor really demands such high optics. and the more you invest in high optics now, the better because mps are definitely rising as evident to the new 7d

keep your 'L's..they will be the glass that will totally amaze you on your new camera..they are high end lenses that people should strive to own, not ditch for the sake of a new body.

you should be having superb results with them on the 40d you already own. Canon's deliberate mis-supply of the 5dmkII has radically backfired on them, when they launch a new prosumer FFR camera, they will have to sash the price of the 5dmkII that they dileberatly held back from retailers just to make anything on them to make room fo the newer model....the time to get a 5dmkII will be when that happens, and for a camera that boasts a dinosaur type AF system, it's likley to be sooner rather than later.

Keep you Ls +1

If you want the 5Dmk2 for the FF of it, really consider 5D classic and give away 40D and Tokina. Then you'll have a brilliant setup of:
5D + 24-70 + 70-200
If you want the 5Dmk 2 for the video, or the MP, well, I see attractive options to be:
5Dmk2 + your 24-70,
5Dmk2 + your 70-200,,
5Dmk2 + 135L + 17-40L,
5Dmk2 + 135L + 200L f/2.8,
5Dmk2 + 135L + 1.4extender + 50f/1.4,
5Dmk2 + 17-40L, + 50f/1.4 + 200Lf/2.8,
5Dmk2 + 50 f/1.4 + a trip to Bali to have fun and shoot nice pics to remember... ;),

Really depends on what you shoot...

Cheers
