Hi going to be shooting my first game on Saturday, will be using my 1DmkII and 120-300mm any tips on where I should be shooting from as I know I wont be able to cover the whole pitch. Will be mainly shooting the home team so perhaps keep to one touchline and just try to keep ahead of play?

Cheers

Matt

Matt,

My personal preference is to shoot the attack (for your case, it would be home team attacking) coming towards you. If you get the opportunity, perhaps move around to the touchline inside the 22, that way you can get some of the bigger tackles in the middle of the pitch...

Dont be tempted to get anything over halfway away, as the crop will affect your IQ! Who are you photographing?

Cheers James, I am shooting my local team - I went up there whilst they were training and asked if I could shoot the 1st team. Hoping that I can get some good shots then take them up on a training session and sell some of my prints hopefully I can convince the wife that all the outlay in the past 12 months will start to pay.

Sounds good...be sure to show us some shots from the weekend. Make sure you go for Av or Manual and make sure it's at f/2.8!!

Those look pretty good to me, how did you find it following the action?

I meant to ask, have you got a background playing rugby? I found that the better I know (and can read) the game, the better shots I get.

Hi fellas, my local team is Old Halesonians Rugby Club and play in Midland 1 - I think. The hardest part of following play was the opponents getting in the way whilst shuffling across the field. Only played at school many moons ago, but watch pretty much every sport going on Sky sports so wasn't too bad. Here's a couple I posted in the sports section. I am quite pleased with what I shot as still coming to grips with the 1D2. I am open to any hints and tips you lot can give me.

Cheers
Matt

Nothing wrong with the photos above good action in them you have caught the try on the two above and captured the player avoiding being tackled. What i do through a game is shoot from both touch lines we are attacking and from behind the try line then in the second half do the same at the other end we are attacking. I like to get a variety of across & down the pitch action. Just make sure you keep out of the way of the touch judge though whilst shooting from touch line area.
