To help a fellow POTNer who asked the question earlier (*here*), here's a simple poll.

When you travel, which do you use?
RAW or jpeg or both?

There are several scenarios in the poll, so please feel free to add several answers and add comments as to why/why not.

Cheers all!
Simon

My camera only ever shoots RAW so thats my answers. Never been on a month long trip or a world trip but i think i would still shoot RAW (just need a lot more cards or a portable drive to download to)

Just realised I hadn't put my thoughts down - "D'oh!"

I prefer going RAW these days,BUT:
If the lighting is good; I definitely won't sell the pics; the subject is straightforward; and, I don't feel like filling memory cards and doing a ton of processing, I'll mix 'n' match RAW with large (medium res.) jpegs as it gives me something like 1500 pics with just ONE 4GB card, which coming from the film days when a roll of 36 exposures was extravagant, still impresses the hell outta me!!!
Also, composing shots more carefully and ditching clearly bad shots, means I've yet to fill more than 3 gigs of cards for any holiday trips = more time enjoying the holiday and less time fiddling on a computer screen!
:D

I've read that for data integrity purposes, it is better to not delete in camera, only in post processing. At today's memory prices, I prefer to just carry 8 GB cards and shoot away.

How do I vote "I always shoot RAW and the trip length doesn't affect that decision"? :(

Oh don't worry. I found a suitable option, lol

You could be right! The cards use the FAT/FAT32 filesystem which is notorious for file fragmentation. So I guess in a recovery situation it'd be best without the fragmentation that in-camera deletion might cause -- never thought about that before.

Since there is only process accessing the device, the possibility for fragmentation is about zero.

Oh, I shoot RAW, period.

Every time I respond to you I seem to disagree, lol. I hope you don't take it personally :( I think that fragmentation could occur because the deleted files and new files going onto the card after that are not of consistent size. E.g. if I delete a 10MB file and the next photo is 15MB then when that gets put onto the card it's possible that it will be fragmented into a 10 and 5MB 'span'. I do agree that it's not a big deal though.

PS I know that that's not how FAT really works, but I tried to keep it simple without going into linked lists etc

Really? Didn't know that one, Guapo!
I always format my cards after each download (heard that was a vital thing to do) and have never had any issues after doing some deleting mid-shoot. So if anyone has the hard 'n' fast facts on this one, please post it up.

Cheers all for putting up thoughts on this.

Especially see the section in the first link that starts like this:

Should you ever need to recover lost data or deleted files from a storage card you should be aware that the more contiguous data on the card was the higher the chances of recovering that data is.
