Hey all, I was considering buying the EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro lens. It has a 1:1 magnification, but still I'm not convinced, because I know little about macro lenses.

Any samples, info and experiences with this lens? I can get it for 350 euros, a good deal?

Thanks for looking! :)

Best way to get started in macro is to get an extension tube and use it on the lenses you already own.

I think there are people that shoot macro and there are others (like me) that want to have a short MFD and get close shots. If you want to play around with macro, the 60 EFs is a great lens as it doubles as a wonderful prime. Not too bad with focusing speed and tack sharp. You won't go wrong with it.

Seems like an amazing lens, any samples? I mean samples of bugs and flowers?

I shoot jewelry with it... right now on a trip no pics with me! but it's one sharp little lens... sharp all across the lens as any macro should be!

I see, I'm pretty much convinced, but can it take macro pictures which look like LordV's?

With lots of practice, Dedication, an excellent place to shoot and good equipment, perhaps.

As for which lens to use there is a poll in the Macro forums which tells which lenses are most popular. https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=160960

Even if you had the same kit as LordV you would be hard pressed to equal his shots. A lot of his extreme closeups are with the MPE65

It is a very good lens. But I use it more for non- macro shots. The working distance at 1:1 is very close with this lens. Not all that great for bugs, even a little close for flowers. If bugs are going to be your main subject, I would suggest a longer lens.

As for shooting like LordV, good luck  !

I have the Canon 100mm macro and it's a cracking good lens right across the aperture range. Mine is actually the oldest non USM version, so focussing is slow but I am sure the newer version is much better in that respect. This lens is possibly a better all round option for macro work than the 60mm version you mentioned because the longer focal length allows you to stay back further, so you are less likely to cover the light source. It's also a very good lens for portraits etc. One of the few lenses I would never sell.

I have owned that lens and the only reason I sold it is that it will not work with full frame. It is an absolutely wonderful lens and you will love it.

Also look at Tokina's 100mm f2.8 399$ new, around 300$ Used

I like 100mm better than 60mm, it allows you to keep a larger distance from you "subjects" than 60mm

Extension tubes are the least expensive way to get into macro

Very nice, IQ up to par of Canon's and nicely priced.. also work on FF

I'm very happy with mine
