ok i have a 70-200 f/4 on my XS that i plan to take to a marching band competition (but photos are not the primary reason for going to it) but i know that f/4 is probably not wide enough. im confused weather to .....

1. shoot in raw, underexpose and bump it up later post-process
2. use my 100mm 2.8 macro lens and jutst not have that reach
3. dont bring my camera

Okay slow down. When you say wide are you talking about the aperture note bringin in enough light? Or are you talking mm wise. Second, if you are talking aperture, when are you taking pictures? Day or night? That will help lot.

What kind of venue? (what level of field: college, high school?)

Odds are that not even f/2.8 will be fast enough. You'll probably need a flash.

1. At high iso on the XS, you will see extreme noise when pushing in PP.
2. The 2.8 of the Macro is going to give you better results than the f/4 of the 70-200. you can always crop a little to compensate for the lack of range.
3. It really depends on what kind of event it is. If you are participating, I wouldn't bring it. Kinda up to you on that one.

use the f4 and work with your ISO if its a football field... then it is lit up enough. If there is no light your 2.8 wont even matter if its completly dark anyways. Plus you will need the range unless you plan on running with the refs down the side lines.

I think the OP is talking about a band competition ON a football field at night.
