I've shot through the fence. I'd hold two finger on the fence and the lens in the v of your hand (between your thumb and first finger), kind of like how you hold a pool stick. It works...OK… but you can stand inside the fence. They are "supposed" to designate an area where a photographer can stand. It's a dead zone, kind of like the circle where batters warm up. I say supposed to because they never do. So, I just stand behind the 1st (or 3rd) base coach. In four seasons, no one has ever said anything. When the pitcher and catcher warm up between innings, I scoot behind the catcher, up against the inside of the fence and snap away. Just make sure no one from the infield is wandering around, warming up, behind the pitcher. And ... watch your head.
