How do I create multi image templates?

This is probably a dumb question so forgive me. If I want to say blog an 800x800 image with multiple, equally spaced images in it - how do I do it? I see people do this stuff all the time and I can't figure it out. I'm guessing there is some kind of template involved to make it quick and easy.

The only way I know how to do it is open a new 800x800 canvas and use the place command to get multiple images on it. Then I have to resize and move them around manually and they never line up quite right, and end up looking like a 4yr old did it. About that time is when I say screw it and give up.

Any tips or tricks you can offer?

Use maths to size/crop them to the right size first then use guides/smart guides to align them evenly within the new canvas.

What I do is somewhat different. I don't like having to re-size each image and then copying them over but that is one way of doing it. I create my blank template then using my rectangular marquee I make a selection where I want the first image and then go to the first image that you want placed there, go back to the template and use paste into. This will paste your image into area selected. You can use transform to re-size your image. This automatically builds a mask for you. Another option is to do this and then change your layer to a smart object which then allows you to replace the contents if you want to swap it out for another image.

In the attachment you can see the result in the lower left along with how my layers look. I like being able to resize in the mask as it gives me greater flexibility on how the page is going to look. You can move the image inside of the mask or you can link the image to the mask and move the image and mask around inside of your template page. In most cases I end up converting the layer to a smart object so that I can use the replace contents.

You could also go the simple route by creating a contact sheet. Put the files you want on the page in their own folder. Select File, then contact sheet and set it up. You can select the number of images you want on what ever size you want then just hit Go. It will evenly space them and place them for you.
