Concerns about 1d Classic

Preface: I used to shoot with 40Ds (sold) and I'm now looking to step up to professional bodies such as 1D series.

I'm looking into getting either the 1d classic (mk i) or the 1d mk ii. What are somethings I need to be worried about when buying a significantly older camera like the 1d classic?

Are there issues tethering to a computer (esp. Mac OSX)? I tend to tether frequently.

How are battery consumption/power issues?

Any LCD issues?

Anything else I should be concerned about?

Thanks for the advice.

Hi I purchased a Id classic some six months ago and still have my 400D which now only gets limited use,why because although the 1D is now 7yrs old the photos are magic,it exposes better the colours are wow and the speed well nothing short of breath taking.the battery I get around 300 RAW shots so I have two both after market and are around $50 NZ [$1US =71c NZ].Hi ISO with long exposure is crap ,the camera is heavy ,the view finder is large the 1.3 crop gives a much improved wide view ,most owners appear to be able to connect ok with Windows and Mac though a firewire cable .Have a read up of both the 1D classic link and the 1D mk11 link to find out more cheers

I think the battery and 2GB limitations are the only reason I haven't got one... But if you can find one really cheap...

the 2GB limitation isnt much of a concern considering the small file size. as for batteries...get yourself some inexpensive third party batteries and bring them with you. gonna need em. although when i rebuilt my batteries i was getting about 500 to 700 shots on a charge. with that said...if you have the means to get the mk II then i would recommend that. larger buffer, twice the rez, dual cards, better noise performance, and much better long exposure performance, as well as being able to zoom in on images on playback.

How is the IQ of the Mk II in comparison to the Mk I? I was under the assumption that CCD (Mk I) tech provides better colors and IQ than the CMOS tech in the Mk II.

Dual cards and rez and buffer are useless for me. The only thing useful is the better noise performance and UI improvements...

All my cards are 4GB - will they at least work? I don't mind if they're limited to 2GB ea. but I'm not going to go out and buy more cards.

1d classic:

-The life of a brand new battery isn't too bad.

-Banding at high ISO

-Not good over ISO 800

-LCD always has a blue hue

other than that I loved it.

I picked one up last year for basketball cause of the 500sec sync speed, nice files from the camera, and conversion to B/W from these files are awesome, battery life really sucks on mine. Other then battery no complaints here.

What are the PROS and more importantly CONS of going with the Mark II or Mark II N over the classic?

I have owned a pair of classics, and they are fine cameras. But after owning an MKII for several months now I highly recommend spending the few hundred more. A new battery will give you a good 2500 shots on a charge. I dont do a lot of shooting with mine because I have to many irons in the fire, but I can tell you Ive only charged the two batteries twice since owning it and they were just recently recharged that second time. My classics would have loved that kind of battery longevity. And you dont have to get the shot perfect every time in order to crop with 8 MP. There are plenty of other reasons to go with the MKII. Just read up and you will see. But if you are very tightly constrained on the budget the classic is still a great camera. I would recommend save up a little longer though if you can and get MKII or MKIIN.

Those still in the decision making process should know there is a 4mp Nikon pro model without the memory or battery limitations; I know there will be some Canon owners who will flame me with confirmation bias for even suggesting such a thing... but for those who aren't married to Canon I see no need to censor information to an educated audience.

Considering I sold all my Canon gear awhile ago and I have no gear anymore, I could easily switch to Nikon.

I've used Nikons before and they're nice. (Speaking fairly to both sides ;))

Nevertheless, I'll take Canons better/cheaper lens selection...I know more about Canon lenses than about Nikons. A 200 f/2.8L, a 16-35mm f/2.8L and a 50mm f/1.4 will be $2k worth of lenses that will fit all my needs.

You sound like you have your head screwed on straight... If you want to look into the Nikon version of the 1d classic you can read about it here: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond2h/ (external link) I'm not trying to steer you either way but it's always best to explore all your options.

I had the 1d classic before, but if I had to decide between the d2h and 1d I'd pick the d2h.
