Wouldn't touch a 1D these days personally, but I did buy a 1Ds recently. Wonderful camera :)

The only issue I have with it is battery life. Am looking into loading up a spent battery with high power LSD NI-MH cells to counter this.

You sound like you have your head screwed on straight... If you want to look into the Nikon version of the 1d classic you can read about it here: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond2h/ (external link) I'm not trying to steer you either way but it's always best to explore all your options.

Wouldn't the 2.7 MP D1h (external link) be technically the Nikon version of the 1D (external link) given they were released about the same time ;) Price-wise though I guess they go for about the same on the used market (D2h and 1D that is).

I don't understand Nikon enough to be comfortable investing in it. I know exactly what I want/need out of Canon. Besides, I have an old 28-135mm laying around along with a 550 EX flash.

I'm sticking with Canon. I'm just trying to justify needing the Mark II over the classic. I don't want to buy a product that is a hassle to use (after using 40Ds and borrowing a Mark III).

That's exactly my point and why I would pick the D2H ceteris paribus. The Canon 1D was released in 2001 with Nikon's competition being the D1H, then in 2003 Nikon created it's more modern version of Canon's 1D with the creation of the D2H. Given it was created 2 years later it has a more modern system utilizing a lithium ion battery, USB 2.0, 2.5" monitor, high capacity CF cards, etc.

the problem for me with the 1D was the battery issue. It would only last ~300 shots. Extras are expensive and heavy so it was always an issue. Beyond that, the screen feels very small these days and the menus (for the 1Dii) are a PITA.

Looking at the specs it seems the pros for the D2H are the larger screen, better battery and higher capacity CF cards support. The D2H loses the IEEE 1394 in favour of USB 2.0 so to me that's a bit of a wash. The 1D does have the 45-point AF versus the 11-point of the D2H. Noise wise the 1D does better in the lower ISOs and the D2H the higher. For me, all things being equal, I'd probably choose the 1D, but doesn't hurt to compare.

To me the bigger issue would be repairs. I would imagine 1D parts are starting to get in short supply.

Does Canon still offer repair service for the 1D classic?
