At some point, I am planning on purchasing a Canon EF 300 f/2.8 L IS lens. Long time waiting on my "wish-list." I have no experience with the "drop-in" CPL filter that is required for this particular glass. Apparently, Canon sells a 52mm drop-in CPL filter for this lens, but I am somewhat skeptical about the quality. Does anyone with this lens/CPL combo care to elaborate on their experience.

Thank you :)

Why are you skeptical about quality? Canon can make good 77mm (for example) filters but not 52?

I currently use a 77mm B+W Kaesemann (MRC) CPL filter with my 70-200 lens and am familiar with the "conventional" thread-type attachment to the front lens. What I am trying to find out, is the Canon 52mm "drop-in" CPL filter a good quality filter for the Canon 300 f/2.8 L IS lens? Appreciate any responses/opinions of photographers that have actually used this drop-in filter. Thanks again.

Singh-Ray adapts your CPL drop in 52mm to its highly regarded series of specialty polarizing filters. But it is a serious hit in your wallet, because you have to buy the Canon drop in cpl filter first, send it to Singh-Ray for modification,. They charge full price plus modification cost and you get back one of four varieties available. With their neutral and warming polarizer filters, you gain light as they add 1.33 stops rather than 2 stops.

Expect to spend about $260 for the SR mod and nearly as much for the Canon drop in.

Singh Ray's blog is an excellent source of information, unfortunately it will cost you money in the long run, because you'll end up wanting to try out what you see there.

Are you sure you need a CP?

I believe I was using a Canon CPL drop in for these two shots, Aperture reading was suspiciously high and I seem to remember that was the reason. Naturally, I wasn't wheeling the filter for best effect, since I forgot it was there. The canon filter is not so critical where it is in the optical path, but the optics require that you have a filter with either glass or gel in place. I actually use the screwmount drop in filter and put B+W UV filter in--most times.

Yes, for the obvious added benefits that a CPL filter provides. I shoot a good bit of outdoor photography.
