I spent all day Saturday reading through all the wonderful flash tutorials and threads on this forum to prepare myself for a Company Picnic event on Sunday. I am amazed at the quality of the images! And I've gotten a bunch of "Great Job!!" comments at work so far this morning.

It was a very sunny day, so fill flash was very necessary. I read about exposing for the background and stopping down 1 or 2 stops and then setting it on manual and adjusting the FEC as necessary. There were of course some instances where I needed more/less flash, but I nailed it on a good number of pics.

You guys are awesome!

A few examples...

As much as we complain about E-TTL, I find that it usually does a pretty good job with outdoor fill, once I get the right settings dialed in.

You are no longer a guy with a camera. You are now a photographer.

Coming from Mr. Flash himself!

Yeah, I kinda got the hang of guessing what FEC I'd need for each shot. There was surely a lot of chimping, but eventually I'll be confident enough to not have to check the histogram after every shot.

Next step: Cheap eBay wireless triggers, cheap flashes and cheap umbrellas!
