Was visiting Vancouver last week and took a Whale watching tour. I only took my 70 - 200 lens. Sure wish I had taken my 500. I was not aware that the boats must stay a minimum distance of 100 meters.

Beautiful capture..

My husband and I were on Vancouver Island in July - took 2 whale watching trips - saw one humpback and one grey whale - rough seas made it almost impossible to get a picture of anything (at least for me)...

Incredible shot. I've seen various whales at sea, but never an orca.

Trust me, I share the same frustration of not having enough range out on the ocean. You just do the best with what you've got. I'd be very pleased with this shot if it were mine! Great capture! :)

Good job! I went a few months back (out of Victoria) and I only had a 200+1.4. Definitely not enough.

The rule is the boats cannot approach the whales but the whales can initiate contact if they want. Our closest encounters happened when the captain parked far enough away but in the general direction the whales were already heading.

I like the pic... looks a little bit distant though... but a good one.

You did the best you could with what you had.
