Well I just got my 70-200mm f/4 today and I find this to be quite the large/heavy lense. Must be hell to carry around the big guns!!!! I have only taken about 20 pics with it but I am Impressed...... This lense can even make me the crappy newbie look good!!

I can carry the F2.8 version for a while, but I prefer to use a monopod if i'm using it for long. Congrats on the new lens :)

I do the same... makes it much easier to carry around, kind of like a handle bar. :D

Congrats on the new lens!

I've got the same one, and when I'm out and fell its getting heavy, I just remember the weight of the 2.8 IS and say to myself 'it could be worse'

Have fun!

I have this lens myself, and I find it to be incredibly light! I thought it'd be a lil heavier, and a lot bigger than it is. I was surprised how small it is when I took it out of the box. I guess it's relatively long, especially with the lens hood on, but it's not very thick.

Oh, and roanjohn, I'm curious why you downgraded from the f/2.8 to the f/4 version?

Hmmm.......it was too heavy...........and 2.8 at 200 doesn't really help without IS.............so I invested the cash on a 20D.

Heavyweight? What would you call the 70-200 f/2.8, even worse the 300 f2.8 which hangs on almost every sports/press-photographer? In addition to 2-3 EOS 1D-series camera, there might even be a backup-camera on the other shoulder...

Congrats anyway, it's a fine lens indeed!

Talking of heavyweights (and not with the intention of highjacking the thread) today I had the chance to handle (unfortunately, not to shoot) the big 600 mm.

Boy... that's HUGE and HEAVY !!! I tried (of course joking, it was mounted on a film camera) to see if it can be handled handheld, but Jesus... no way ! Probably with a shutter speed 1/zillionth of a second some kind of pic can came out clear but God only knows what is going to be framed :D

The most "heavy" lens I've ever tried handheld is the 300/2.8 with fairly good results (even in lowlight conditions). But I wonder what this happy fellow does with his 40 pounds/16.5 kg 1200mm/5.6 (no IS) when he forgets his tripod at home... http://www.pbase.com/vthian/image/33066908 (external link)
