I purchased a refurbished 50d at the end of July. I had the 85 1.8 and currently have the 28 1.8 and 24 - 105 L. All my pictures seem very unsharp where I think it's the camera and not the lenses. I am linking to 4 raw files, if there is another test I should do please let me know. Otherwise I would like thoughts, I'm thinking I need to send it into Canon.

These files are huge. I doubt anyone will hang around to download them then open them in DPP or similar programme,,then again I could be wrong..

How about attaching a few images here with EXIF intact??

I had a look at them. Your shutter speed is extremely slow. Unless you had your camera on a tripod when you snapped these, 1/6 sec and 0.8 sec are waaaaaay too long for a sharp hand-held exposure, even at a short focal length with image stabilization. Looking at them again, I can see very obvious signs of camera shake in the text on the bottles. You need to use a faster shutter speed. The rule of thumb for a full-frame camera is to use a shutter speed at least as fast as 1/focal length (i.e. if you were shooting at 60mm, your shutter speed should be at least 1/60 sec). In the case of the 50D, which is a 1.6 crop camera, it is recommended to use 1/(1.6 * focal length).

Thanks for the quick replies!

I did use a tripod to try to get as sharp as possible. :(

I will export into a jpg with exif data. Thought I would post the RAW files to get as accurate examples out as possible.

Since you have image editing turned on here is the second one (USM = 250, 0.3, 0):

How are you triggering your camera on the tripod? Self-timer? (If not, you should be). Is mirror lock-up enabled? How stable/sturdy is your tripod? In 2410580.CR2 I can definitely see camera shake in the text on the detergent bottles...

And here's a 100% crop of the same image (USM = 300, 0.3, 0). I took a guess as to what you may have focused on.:

My focus is on the 'th' of the Method bottle. I got lazy and didn't hook up my remote shutter release. I use a Manfroto tripod and ballhead...so the camera shake may have been from me pushing the shutter button.

I will try a couple more example tomorrow night when I get some time.

Thanks everyone for taking a look and commenting, it is greatly appreciated!!!!

Correct the white balance before converting to jpeg and posting (click the dropper on the white sprayer of the "Shout" bottle).

Also, are you sharpening in the RAW converter or in Photoshop, and if so, what are your sharpening settings?

Check to make sure your auto focus is set to "one shot"

At work, so just following up on the outstanding questions. Hope to get more pics tonight.

I use LR2 and when I import I have the preset portrait sharpen selected. So when I exported the JPG's, that was applied.

My autofocus is set to one shot.

Tonight I will use my cable release and make sure no presets are selected on import.

As a followup, when I had my XSi, my images when I pixel peeped a lot cleaner and just needed a little sharpening. The pictures I'm getting from my 50d when I pixel peep seem really graining and no amount of sharpening helps.

So my question, tonight will be, is the images straight from the camera what I should expect before post processing. To me they seem pretty soft.

Thanks!

It looks like camera shake to me. Put it on a tripod and all that jazz and I'm sure it'll be ok. You can always up the sharpness in camera little too.

Canon "Snappy".... Thanks Mom and Dad!
