click on the flag pole or the white portions of the soccer shoes...that should be "OK".

Try to sneak up to 1/2000th SS.
A noisy sharp shot is still a sharp shot.

My 40D, nothing below 1/800 and nothing above iso400, for sharp, stop action soccer.

I would leave the camera on auto, and adjust WB in post.... It looks like you'll be there already to sharpen the images, just create a PS action and let is crank it out. That'll alleviate that step when on the pitch. Alas, I would consider sending the lens out for recalibration. It truthfully should be sharper than the images its providing you.
