I've been wanting to print a photo of mine on canvas to hang in the livingroom but I'm not sure which photo to use. It ain't cheap so I thought I'd get it right the first time. In my head I see abstract macro shots or colourful landscapes.

I don't really have any abstract macro shots but here are some shots I've considered..

That first one would probably look pretty good.

Some types of canvas printing have a limited gamut, so each of those three images (beautiful shots, by the way) may have some colours that would test the limits. It's no biggie, you just need to ask for a soft-proofing profile to check. You'll probably find there's nothing to worry about.

In my (pleb) opinion, canvas is better at making average photos look good, than it is at making great photos look stunning. Maybe that's just me.

Number 1 and 2 are good canvas candidates.
#3 belongs on semi-gloss, baryta. satin, lustre, or even a a glossy paper.

Thank you JEC for your input. Here's a more abstract macro photo I took yesterday, dunno if it belongs on canvas though. Could use some cropping perhaps but I like the soft colours and the dreamy look.

Hi Oliviero,

Some great images there!

I run a canvas printing business so can give you some advice. I think in general landscapes and nature shots like the ones you've posted work very well on canvas. Portrait shots are nice but often people blow them up too big so you have these huge scary images of faces staring at you on your wall.

So anyway - I think all of your images would work, one other thing you should think about is whether you want the image wrapped around the edges of the frame or not, because you'll lose between 2 and 4 cm of the image depending on the depth. We offer a free mirror wrap service if you didn't want to lose any of the image (this is where we clone the edges of the image and replicate it on the edges of the frame).

I personally would go with your silhouetted image as a mirror wrap and this most recent macro flower one as a wrap...

Let me know if you have any more queries!

Very useful information kerryk, thank you. I had no idea that there was something called mirror wrap but I can see how that would come in handy when printing an image with details all the way to the borders.

I haven't really decided where to have it printed but I'm located in Sweden so I'll probably go with something local. I actually found one that looked pretty good and tried to download their icc-profile but no matter where I put it I still couldn't find it in Photoshop. Very odd.

Don't know much about MACs, but if you're using Windows did you <right-click> on it and install it in Windows?

I did but to no avail. And yes, I'm using Vista.

Well, I've stayed away from Vista so I'll stay away from the usual comment / joke about it.

But perhaps somebody else here who is experienced with it can help now that it's know you're using Vista.

One other thought: have you ever had a problem installing any other profile in your OS? If not, perhaps it's a problem with the profile. You might also want to download the profile again on the small chance it was corrupted.

Good luck. I hate wasting time on computer problems, and assume you do too.
