Going to iceland next week I have 2 big questions

1. can I rent a car with a valid US driver's license?

2. recommend some good day trips with nice scenery

already plan to see the hot springs and I'd love to take a trip around the island if I can rent a car that is

Not sure about #2, but for #1.. go to a AAA office and get an international drivers license.
Will cost you about $15 (cheaper if you are a AAA member) and will allow you to legally drive (rent a car) in just about any country.
Call first to make sure Iceland is included in the countries the International license covers though (just to be safe).
