Mono - unless you're gonna stand in one spot (which doesn't work too well for football), a tripod won't work well. And if you're walking through the box or shooting from the box, the players and coaches will not appreciate a tripod - space is tight anyway. :)

Thanks guys... as a side note this is for 11-12 year old football... so space on sidelines would be fine...... looks like I will give the monopod a try.

Thanks

Tripods are usually not allowed depending on the league, go with mono.

I am just getting started in photography and I have shot with a tripod for the first 3 weeks until I found the Monopod That I wanted and tonight I used my Monopod for the first time and I don't want to go back to the tripod. The Monopod is awesome

Try handholding and shooting first. That's all I've ever done until last friday night when I mounted my flash onto a monopod. Didn't like it that well. Harder to pan the camera without tilting shots.

And please don't take a tripod unless you plan to camp out at one spot way far from the field.

Yeah, I shoot handheld. I tried a monopod yesterday for my brothers football game, and I guess since I can get so close, it doesn't really help me.

to the guys who say handhold,

you guys might be using a 70-200 or something of that sort... personally I wouldnt shoot with a 300 handheld anymore for that long of a game. but that is just me. Again it all goes into what gear you are using.

I won't even shoot a 70-200 handheld anymore. Simply no sense to for me at least.

Try handholding and shooting first.

Wow! Maybe Magilla Gorilla can do it not not me. The lens weighs 6# alone, not counting the camera body, flash and battery pack - easily 12-15#. Even without the flash, I can't hand hold my rig for more than one or two shots, then the front of the lens seems to droop! :-(

There's one photographer here.. she's about 5'5 and actually carries her 40D with the 70-200 F2.8 .. around her neck! I can't even imagine attempting to carry that weight on the neck.

By the way.. a TRIPOD would get you or your equipment killed if you weren't using it like a monopod .. no way you'd be able to get yourself or the equipment out of the way of players coming towards the sidelines!
