if your only concern is to resize photos: use what u have. iPhoto DOES resize photos (cf. link above). so DOES DPP.

dont spend a couple of hundret $$ for resizing photos, when you can get it for free. well thats my oppinion, and it's your money. Lightroom is one fine piece of software, but come on, for resizing photos its an overkill...

Welcome to POTN. The 85 f/1.8 is an excellent lens. I use it for indoor HS sports. I also feel that it's a bargain considering the quality/price.

For software, Photoshop Elements is a good program with a lot of features for less than $80. I now use LR and PSE 7. Between them I have no need for CS4.
Start out with PSE 7 and see if you need more. You may want LR if you are shooting RAW because the raw editor in PSE doesn't have as many features as LR does.
