Just wondered, I can search for items only from UK, but also I would like to be able only to see the items still currently for sale - is there a way of doing this?

Searching unlocked threads is used to buy stuff
Searching locked threads is for determing "POTN market value"

I feel your pain. I was looking for a 200 2.8 and was frustrated to see an open thread to only read "sold" So I ventured to Craiglist and found what I was looking for. Maybe a buy or sell thread can be automatically locked after a certain set time frame. It's up to the original poster to courteous enough to lock the threads.
