Will a Lowepro Flipside 400 hold a single Canon 400 f/2.8 ??? Not with a camera or anything, just the lens alone in the bag. I have a flipside 400 and will have to transport by foot a 400 2.8. Quite a long ways to go and some public transportation will be part of it. Just wondering if I can stuff in that bag. I'de really rather not carry the Canon case around.

Check out 'http://kgear.com/' (external link). I bought a long lens case from them. Good luck hauling that beast around....

The flipside is my only photo backpack. I have the majority of the think tank line of bags except their newback packs and rollers. I have never needed the rollers until recently. I can fit the f/4 lenes just fine in my think tank bags. Width and length is just fine on the 400. I'm just wondering if my flipside will close due to the depth on the 400's hood.

I didn't really want to have to buy another bag just to go stealth with this thing.

If the Flipside doesn't work, I can personally vouch for the Think Tank Glass Taxi or Streetwalker Pro. I've used both. Currently, I'm using the Streetwalker Pro to tote around the 400 f2.8L IS with a 1D2 attached.

I don't think you can get the bag zippered and shut. Maybe it's possible if you take all the inserts out, but it still is going to be tight. I have an older, larger lowepro backpack to lug mine around, and I end up leaning forward from all the weight.

My students ask, "Where's that bazooka lens?"

Yeah, I was planning on removing all the padding.

I looked at the specs again. My 5D with RRS L-plate is almost 7" lengthwise. So I placed it standing up in the case. The 400 has a diameter of roughly 6.5. I figure they are close enough. I can get the bag shut just fine. It bulges...but this isn't a standard solution, strictly a several day transportation issue.

If I needed to carry this thing any longer I would stick it in a think tank roller.
